As for MO, it's my understanding that it was just along the migration route
from VA, KY, TN. So, many of the settlers from MO were just migrating west
from other places and may have stopped over a year or two to resupply. If
there's more to it than that, I would be interested too.
St. Louis MO., is at the confluence of 5 rivers. River travel was a major
form of travel during the time. People from all over the country came through
St. Louis on their way to the West. They bought equipment and supplies for
their trip west.
I live in Overland MO. (right outside St. Louis). Overland was the beginning
of the Lackland trail. This lead to the Overland trail and then divided in
to the Santa Fe Trail, Oregon Trail and I can't remember the other.
