Barbara Lowery was about 5 years younger than I. I am 70. as a teenager
she and her parents used to attend Pony Creek Baptist Church, Erath
County . She and I were in the same Sunday school class and night bible
study class. She was an athlete at Stephenville High school and I think
she was on the team with the Laney girls, a Hale, and a girl from
Huckaby, Teexas the year that girl's basketball was out of favor with
city raised girls and the school board. These girls who attended Three
Way, Huckaby, and Bluff Dale elementaries in their home district won
State in Girl's basketball for Stephenville High School. - they had
played with or against each other since the 4 th Grade. Texas Dog or Bill
McCarty should be able to help you here. They lived between Duffau and
Johnsville (now Three Way) and I think Mr. ( (Milton?) Lowery had a small
dairy on the old home place of Herman Talley. , where the black land was
on one side of the fence and sand on the other side. Wonderful fruit,
melon, and peanut country.
Athens is on Hwy 36 between Waco and Tyler- it is a county seat and the
Blackeyed Pea capitol of the south, with annual blackeyed pea festivals.
The Blackeyed Pea restaurants are becoming popular here- Fort Worth area
is their home office. My son , a contractor has built 2 or 3 and we had
Thanksgiving dinner in one. Yes, to all north of the Mason Dixon Line we
do eat all kinds of cow peas in Texas. A man from Athens is the disputed
inventor of the hamburger from his experience in concession stands in the
Chicago World's Fair. Leaving East there are antebellum southern
mansions across from Wallmart.
Heard a man say the other day that he plans to be buried between Wallmart
and McDonald's so his wife will come by every week.
