Kunkel- Grimes- Morgan
My children went to school with some Kunkels at Bynum, Hill County,
Texas. One of their distandt cousins is a Dr. Kunkel, , M.D. who works in
the emergency room at Providence Hospital , Waco and is an usher in
Hewitt Forst Baptist Church. He prefers emergency room wor.
Ever hear of a Grimes Garage in Hillsboro, Texas? He gave signs to
friends and one showed up in Burma, Europe, and Pikes Peak in 1940-50s.
Morgan- Milton Morgan is a retired history teacher in West, Texas, south
Squire Morgan and J.P. Morgan were brothers. J.P. - not the one in New
York, I don't think, but he did own the Morgan Louisiana Railroad and
Steamship line and the Morgan- Campbell Ranch between Morgan, Texas and
Glen Rose and Walnut Springs, Texas. Squire had a home next to ours in
Walnut Springs. I was one of his paulbearers to the church . Mrs. Morgan
gave me a striking Ingraham pendolum mantle clock with alarm when my
daughter saw the mail and told her I had completed my M.Ed. degree in
Univ. of North Texas in Denton. She said it was in the Morgan family for
150 years in 1960's when she came carrying it through the back yard to
me. It still works but is a little noisy striking at night, so we just
There were also Masseys in Walnut Springs. Mitchell Massey was a genius
who had been a merchant marine sea Captain in World War 2 and sailed the
Atlantic and Mediteranean, sometimes without military escort. He finally
left Walnut Springs and retired again in Glen Rose. His father lost a
fortune when the Walnut Springs Bank was robbed 2 or 3 times and the lock
was not broken. Mitchell's dad sold a large farm to make up losses to
depositors. I know just enough about this one to know thwre could have
been quite a book written about it and the days when Walnut Springs was
headquarters of the Texas Central Railroad. They had a Katy lake, a
college, a Railroad hospital, atuldt hardball teams, and a round house
and 4 bands-one played each sunday while Francis Ernest Prideaux Brune of
England did exhibition diving and swimming by the RR park.
His grave has a solid granite full length cap- the mistery was who paid
for it and what happened to his money? He had a girl friend there.
Ring any bells?
