In the 1940's there was a Lem Weeks and his son living in the upper
Black Stump \Valley, near Duffau near Will Fouts. Dad used to admire the
excellent grain crops they made and one or both at one time or the other
each ran a combine and a thresher, As I remember Mr. Weeks and Oce Stone
ran a small thresher in partnership - Stone furnished the thresher
engine. It was a 22 inch separator (thresher). The Riggs- Walter Hollis
rig had a 45 inch cylinder and an Aultman Taylor engine . The Riggs -
Hollis rig took 25 men to even try to keep it running with 8 bundle
wagons. The Riggs - Stone rig could run with a 15 man crew but threshed
less grain per day. They had 6 or 8 Model A Ford bundle wagonswith no cab
which were faster than some tractors. Threshers strill ran into the
1960's even after the wartime shortage of combines was overin Erath
County due to the cross timbers soil not ripening the grain evenly at the
same time. More grain was saved with threshers than combines unless the
grain was windrowed and dried, but that also cost more to do,
Hope this helps some. Lem Weeks may have rented some Bosque County land.
