I have a number of Whites who lived in Erath, Hood counties in the mid
to late 1800's. I'm sorry but I do not recognize the names Leonard or
Samuel Black White.
Do you know what part of the country they resided. One of my
ggggrandfathers wrote about his exploits in Erath and surrounding
counties from 1851 'til 1893. The University of North Texas did carry
and online copy of his work but I'm not sure it is still available
online. Will try to locate the link and let you know.
Have enjoyed receiving your informative newsletter and enjoyed the
My family were the whites of Erath Co. and like so many others of the time that
weren't wealthy aristocratics they have been really hard to trace but I am striving to
do just that.
My grandfather Leonard F. White, son of (I believe Samuel Black White, and Mary Jane or
Elizabeth Jane Thornton) were pretty elusive but think I am on their trail. It seems my
grandpa, (that I have worshipped for over 50 years) was pretty closed mouthed about his
family. He was pretty head strong and would run away from things that didn't go his
own way. Needless to say my mother and her big family had quite a nomadic life growing
up. Most of the time the kids never went to school more than a few months in one school
before being moved, cuzz grandpa lost his temper and quit his job.
Anyway enough about that. I am looking for information on life in Erath Co. in the early
1800's. The statistics are great but would be interested in being pointed in the
direction of maybe some old diaries or that type of stuff to give my grandkids a feel for
what life was like when grandmas grandpa was growing up.
I think some of the really fun stuff to read in geneaologies is the things like " Had
a big wind storm come through and blew open the barn door and my brothers and I had to
chase bessie the milk cow for three hrs. to get her home".
I live in Eastern Washington, (on the edge of the frontier) and we have many such books or
diaries as that available here. Do you have that stuff down there?
Again thanks for the newsletter
