Let's narow it down some. There are 2 different Stone lines scaterred
over Erath County and 2 Garner families, not closely connected if at
I am descended from James T. Stone #1, born Flat Creek, Bedford
who married Sarah Bateman, both buried in Arkansas . these and my
kin settled in Huckaby , Texas and spread out from there. Most of
Stones were of Church of Christ in Huckaby and Graham Street,
Stephenville. Neil McLennan of McLennan county , Texas was also born
Flat Creek, Bedford, Tennessee, and was appointed by State
lead in organizing Bosque Couinty and in next session was appointed
organize Erath County. McLennan County tax and Clerk's archives have
earliest Erath County land records after Milam county, or Old Milam
District was split up.
George B. Erath, Austrian born surveyor and Col. Buck Barry, of
near Coirsicana, Texas and moved to Iredell, Texas, where he and 17
kin are buried in above ground Concrete crypts, added to, sealed,
joined. These are visible between north Bosque and East Bosque south
the Iredell to Walnut Springs road. These acted as a team as
were organized, but George Erath, in his memoirs dictated to his
in Waco said he did very little surveying in Erath County. And I was
he was the one who caused the jopgs in Stephenville Streets near old
Also at least 2 sets of Garners. My mom's niece, Imogene Hatchett
James Garner, who farmed and worked for Erath County REA. His dad was
"Uncle Dave" Garner who owned a farm across Sims Creek from
brothers were Milton and Wayne Garner and one sister, ran the Selden
switchboard for 4 party lines from their house. it was bought from
Kay and Ida Wyly Kay. Either John or his brother in law Tom Payne was
first Selden postmaster and store operator.
The other line of Stones were from Alabama and settled near Selden,
and some of my first cousins are related to both sets of Stones.
Garrett Springs, (Selden Post Office, school and Church) ran cotton
a thresher setup and annual run,and a 32 volt Delco wind and gas
power plant which supplied Cotton gin, Church, some homes. and school
buildings. Of course, with those schedules, all were not in use at
same time of the day or year if one turned off the lights when not
needed. Most of these Stones attended Baptist churches.
Lida Garner , dau. of James and Imogene joined Dr. Naylor's daughter
medical missionary trip to India and later returned to Dallas-
area , obtasined her Doctor's Degree, and now teaches in Baylor
Nursing in Dallas.
There are other Garners in Waco- one is a Church Secretary in Hewitt.
The other Garners lived in north part of the county and one of the 2
Texas Garner State Parks was built on their land, near the
country Club Lake- fishing pond. a few miles south of I -20. It is
closed. I do not know about their family connections. I wonder if
of these Garner families were on the tree of vice President John
Garner of Bonham? Harry Truman also had a brother- a drifter, who
time in Erath County working for a farmer near Stephenville. he let
came, hopping a Train as a Hobo. When Congresman Sam Russell
this to Pres. Truman, he remarked that that was probably his
.Sam's sister Gail Russel, was my High school Civics Teacher.
Will check other sources as time allows.
