I attended church and high school with Willie Gail Stephens of Selden,
Texas and his younger brothers, Charles, Sid Van and Vance. Willie worked
at General Dynamics (Convair Fort Worth) , attended college, and served
in the Army and started teaching all about the same time I dod all the
above. His dad was a Primitive Baptist Elder and had a sandy land peanut
and trucxk farm between the Selden community and Pleasant Hill aka
Chigger Hill Methodist church. He married M.E. Johnson, daughter of
Albert Sidney Johnson and sister to Elmer, Tim, W.C. ( Clifford, ) , Jot
and another Johnson sibling or two. Mom and dad attended Selden school
and church with them. We worked with them on the "Chicken Pie thresher
runs. In other words, we had to furnish a hand and a thresher wagon for
grain to get our grain threshed. The 25 man crews stopped camping out and
eating at a cook shack- not a cowboy style chuck wagon, but a 4 wheel
wagon or trailer during the WW2. No other labor was available. These
chuck wagons had a door at one end, a wood stove in the other end, and
the sides opened to make a table on both sides and a roof over the table.
I carried wood for one from the Anderson 640 Ranch steam thresher rig.
I am sure some of the Tates can update you on the Stephens families-
Willie and I taught Industrial Cooperative Training (ICT) at the same
time and attended State Vics contests and workshops, he from
Stephenville and I from West and Midway high schools. We had both taught
academic subjects and worked in industry to qualify for additional
training for the Co-op training. Willie was also a Basketball official
and one of his daughters played in Russia with a U.\S. team.
Sid Van married a Neblett from Stephenville. He did work for the U.S.
Production Credit Association or a similar program in Gastesville and
some in Waco, I think.
There q1uiet a few Stephens families in the county at various times - do
not confuse them with the Stephen family for whom Stephenville was named
or with the Stevens families. Great Great Grandad Rev. William Pinckney
Hatchett, M.D., pharmacist, preacher and land speculator, married Great
G=randmother Angelina Stevens in Chipley (Pine Mountain) Georgia. They
and her dad, Rev. B.T.Stevens are buried in Selden cemetery on the Duffau
Creek. Their headstone was mistakenly marked Stephens while their
daughter between them and Dr. Hatchett was marked Stevens, which all
Georgia records show. Dr. Hatchett was in the Republic of Texas before
1840 and had cousins and brothers from Tennessee, Ga. and Texas with Gen.
Taylor in Mexico. Crid Hatchett , a cousin and Church of Christ Elder,
moved to Chalk Mountain . Erath County, Texas. with his Atkins- Stigler
descendants close behind him.
Don't know a connecti=on, but in 1960's the President of Abilene
Christian University (then ACC) was a Bro. Stevens. He said his grandad
was a frontier sheriff and Bap=tist minister who had a pistol in one
pocket, a Bible in his saddlebag, and a fifth of whiskey in one pocket
for snakebite and sore throats. I wonder if any Stevens families who see
this can fill me in- was Bro Stevens of Selden and Ga. related to the
grandad of the Pres. of A>C>C>?
Wasn't Stephens or Stephan the German spelling? Great Grand Charles
Madison Hipp was descended from Stephan or Stephen Hipp (Hepp) , an early
1700 German immigrant who, with 2 brothers were from 70 miles southeast
of Manheim Germany. Some of these Carolina Hipps were Dutch Fork Hipps.
grandad 7 times back Col. Ben Cleveland of Revolutionary War went into
the Carolina "Moravian villages" to check their loyalty to the U.S.
Rebels , took what supplies he needed, and signed for it. The State of
North and South Carolina eventulally paid most Moravian claims with his
name on them. Yowells- my German ancestors were in some of these
groups.in Ga. and Carolinas. Some of these now live in Waco and Killeen.
I think the Scandavian spelling was Stevens.
Take care, hopes this helps and keeps you on the right Stephen- Steven-
Stephens and some say a Stevens trail
