If these Kings are the same family I think they are, they and I are both
descendants of first Tennessee Goivernor , Col. John Sevier. the King
that was Governor of Missouri was also the Misouri Judge who presided
over the Mormon pioneers of Navoo city for the practice of polygamy. His
descendants in Stephenville, Texas started an Abstract and law office on
the Stephenville Court house square. About 20 years ago I met a
descendant of Governor King in South Central Texas- a clerk at a motel.
When I saw her name, I asked her if she was a Sevier descendant- not all
Kings are. She said Yes, are you? then , when asked , she told me a story
about her or her mother being a small girl when the King Ranch was
becoming widely known, and her dad or grandad sent a letter to the ranch,
asking if Mr. King was his long lost older brother, as I remember.
A letter came back that they should wait in Gonzales Wagon yard on a
given day and time. The family went and sat in the wagon. yard. A stage
with black curtains pulled up near them and a man in a black hat , suit,
and gloves pulled back the black dust curtains and asked her dad or
grandad (the oldest man in that family present) to get in the coach,
they needed to talk. They were gone 2 or 3 hours down the river and
returned. The dad left the coach, got in the wagon seat, and drove the
team out of town withou speaking. Finally, when out of sight and sound of
other people, they asked the dad if that if it was his long lost
Brother from Missouri whom was believed to have run a3way as a sailor on
a Mississippi River boat. The dad stopped the wagon, turned to the family
and said very clearly to them "I do not want to ever hear the subject
mentioned again". He didn't. Reason unknown? A loverwho rejected him or
a family skeleton which involved him??
They were not popular in Missouri with the Civil War Union
Reconstruction politicians. My Missouri Moxley- Fleming-Murphy- Ogan kin
and friends came to Stephenville by wagon train and are mostly buried in
Indian Creek cemetery on Hwy 281 south of Stephenville. One buried by
the north fence, said he wanted nothing between him and Missouri but a
barbed wire fence. There is an American Indian buried between the
cemetery gates under a flat rock. He was a scout and, sided with the
Anglos against hostile Texas Indians. The cemetery, school and church
was named for this Missouri Indian friend.
I just scanned several pages of my 1961 Sevier Family History book by
Cora Bailes Sevier and Nancy Sevier madden. Several Kings were listed as
being in Stephenville , Texas alive, some born there and others from
Missouri were buried in Stephenville. If you fit this book, it traces
through England, Belgium, and France to Navarre and the Basque Burbon
families of navarre, Avalon and Pamplona and Aragon to parents of St
Francis Xavier, marie D'Xavier and Dr. juan Jasso with broken links to
Pepin the Short AD 600, a prime minister whose king in Italy& or
Pyrineyes Mountains did not want to be botherred with the daily duties
of King. These records were translated by a Priest who spoke and read the
Basque language, in the Pamplona Library. since 1950.
It begins with a King who ran a Tennessee Iron works with two of the
Seviers and married a third. Does this sound familiar? I do not think my
dad or partially deaf Grandad knew they were related to these kings. Can
send more names if it would help.Could zerox pages relating to Kings.
One of the McElroys was mom's teacher in Oak Dale or Huckaby schools ,
said to be the first Erath County school teacher. I consider that to be
debatble, no reflection on him intended. Most of the folk in that area
had Arkansas roots. Can any Stephenville King descendants comment on the
above? Know you are out there.
