Thank you Charles for the response. I'm not sure our Kings are
related. I know that my great grandmother Josephine (Josie) H. King
McElroy and her siblings were born somewhere in Alabama, her parents
were born somewhere in Georgia, and her parent's parents were born
somewhere in South Carolina. This information came from the census.
The McElroy who was the school teacher is not from my family. My
McElroys lived in the Duffau area and over into Hamilton Co around
Hico. I believe my King's lived in the Duffau area also. William
King was a farmer.
Jack and Josie (King) McElroy's son Truman Elmer was my grandfather.
Josie died when he was three years old at the age of 28. They said
she died from tape worm. She is buried in Hico, Hamilton Co., Tx.
Dying of a tapeworm is not surprising in Erath County- Great Grand Robert
A. Wyly and William Sevier Wyly of Selden , BORN IN bLONT cOUNTY, tENN
AND LIVED IN hIAWASSE- hABERSHAM cO. - tOCCOA, gA. would feed their hogs
charcoal from the logs he burned for that purpose and to make a charcoal
filter for the rainwater going into his rainwater cistern, resembling an
old well. In the 1930's some fed their hogs rabbits for meat scrap.
Turkeys would pack their craw with snail shells . Snails and grasshoppers
were a known host for roundworm eggs. I have helpped dress hogs infested
with them, We still renderred their lard and cured the ham and shoulder
and midling meat. Most women knew to cook it with a hot fire and not to
eat it pink or half raw. Turkeys were given pills, now shots, several
days before market time to kill parasites. We also put purple Potassium
Permanganate in their drinking water to kill parasites- poison to humans
but not to birds with a craw and gizzard.
Mrs. Atkins warned us at school to not go barefoot around horse lots as
the Tricinilla (SP) would pass from our digestive system into our arm and
leg muscles and Cist up, sapping our energy. She proved it with State
health textbooks. Ihave heard of children in Waco this year who were
being treated for round worms. Most danger came from old Testament
animals not considerred Kosher, including squirrels , rabbits and
O.Possums. The best known danger in Erath \County, esp. in fenced
cemeteries, is the Deer tick which spreads a sometimes fatal disease to
racoons and humans. The result is Lymes disease. Some between Waco and
Stephenville have died of this in the last few years by not being
treated in time. A skinny Coon probably will be coverred in Deer ticks.
Put a Downy pad in each sock and /or a dog flea and tick collar on each
ankle and the ticks probably will let you alone. This is also supposed to
run the chiggers. Bangs Disease- Bruceolisis was a problem and still is
in any Dairy cow area. Mom had it once and ran fever 2 or 3 years and had
to rest more. We knew other cattle traders and dairymen who caught thios
. We were required to brand the cow's jaw with a B and she went through
the auction ring as a "Canner and Cutter", meaning she would be processed
in high pressure steam kettles and made into Spam, Wieners, and lunch
meat. Millions have been spent fighting Bruceolosis. Thanks to Nafda free
trade with Mexico and cattle wading across, it is hard to eradicate.

My mother's cousin, who is the daughter of my grandfather's brother
told her about the connection to the KIng's Ranch. She told my
mother growing up a man use to come to visit them on occasion and
that he was from the King Ranch. She said we were related to them
and even told my mother what his name was. The bad part is my mom
cannot remember what his name was and said I wish I had written it
Her dad Homer was nine years old when his mom Josie died so that is
why I believe the man came to see him later in life and not my
grandfather; as he was only three at the time of her death. My
grandfather knew very little about his mother and her family.
I would really like to find out about my King family. Hope we can
find a connection somewhere or maybe someone in cyberspace will
recognize my Kings and contact me.
