have you heard of the capture of Herman Lehman ans sister of New
Braunfels area? It was in True West or Frontier Times - or excerpts of
the book by Mr. Lehman a few years ago.
The University of North Texas has a large Texas German Language section-
papers, books, & so forth. There were several German children captured
before and during the Civil War. The German towns had no buffer tribe of
friendly Indians who would warn them about raiders, like the Caddoes did
for Erath County. The Concho and Colorado valleys were easy to hide in.

I have to correct one bit of info about Cynthia Ann Parker. Quannah
Parker was her son. At the age of 9, Cynthia was captured by the
Comanches during a raid on Ft. Parker on 19 May 1836. She lived
with the Comanches until 1860 and was totally acclimated into
Comanche life to the point where she never re-adjusted into white
society. While living with the Comanches, she married Peta Nocona
and had Quannah and two other children with him who did not survive
to adulthood. Her daughter Topsannah was "re-captured" with her.
Topsannah died of the flu/pneumonia on 15 December 1863. Quannah
and her other son Pecos, remained with the Comanches. Pecos died
from small pox approximately two years after his mother was retaken
by the whites. Cynthia Ann Parker died in 1870. Quannah had his
mother's remains moved to Oaklahoma in 1910. Quannah himself died
on the 23 Feb 1911. Quannah, Cynthia Ann and Topsannah are buried
in the military cemetery at Ft. Still, Oklahoma. There are!
at least two cemeteries at Ft. Still; one is where Geronimo and
many other Apaches are buried. The other is probably where Quannah
Parker's remains are. Unfortunately, this past summer, when my
husband and I were visiting Ft. Still, I didn't know to look for
Quannah Parker there so we didn't visit his grave.
I'm working on a compliation of Indian captives stories. The source
of this info is the book CYNTHIA ANN PARKER: THE LIFE AND THE
LEGEND by Margaret Schmidt Hacker
I have a scanned photo of Cynthia and Topsannah that I can send to
anyone who wants it. It probably won't print out well but it's the
only one I have. E-mail me directly at tonolle(a)nts-online.net if
you want it.
