The Texas Almanac shows Chalk Mountain in Erath County. It had a
population of 25 in 2000. It is on U.S. 67 between Stephenville and Glen
Rose, about 0.7 mi. from the Somervell County line. My 1896 GLO map shows
Chalk Mountain and the county line in the same place as now.
People who lived across the county line would probably say they lived
AT Chalk Mountain.

I have some confusion about the county which Chalk Mountain is in, I know
that it has been in Somervell Co and Erath, but not sure which was first.
Can anybody who lives in Erath County enlighten me?
My father said he was born there at Chalk Mountain in 1898. I know the
lived around the area for some time and I have relatives still living in
area. A few years ago, I looked up some of those folks and saw the area of
Chalk Mountain and a one room schoolhouse some few miles away which many of
my relatives attended. I think I recall that there was a church nearby.
Another cousin took me into the country and found a house which he thinks
the house an uncle had lived in, but the exterior had been changed so he
wasn't positive. It was a nice area and I enjoyed my visit there. I lived
in Minnesota at that time and am now closer to "home" so hope to get to
the area of my father's roots a little better.
Researching Bentley, Perry, Brashear.
I had an Aunt, Ola Bentley who married a Bennett and lived her entire life
My grandfather John Franklin Bentley, Sr. was active in the Masonic Lodge.
My information leads me to believe that he began this activity while in
Co. He and his wife left the area prior to 1925 and moved to Randlett, OK.
John Franklin Bentley, Sr. was married to Martha Delilah (Mattie) Perry.
came from Tyler County. They farmed in the Chalk Mountain area for many
years and many of my cousins were born there as well. I have lots of
information about descendants with the Bentley surname but very little
the Perry's. Brashear would have been the maternal surname of John
Bentley. John and Mattie had 8 or 9 kids.
Thanks for any info about the area or my people.
