I am seeking info on the John Chisolm , born Knoxville , Tennessee and
County Clerk in Paris, Texas before his Denton County ranching ended. He
and/or Col. Goodnight and /or Mr. Loving and/or W.T. Wagoner drove cattle
from Denton County to San Angelo- Concho Valley, through Erath County
An earlier John Chisholm was ran an inn and bar in Knoxville, Name was
re- spelled to Chisum-Chissum- Chisholm-Chisolm. He advocated getting
British help to keep the Mississippi ports open for Overmountain frontier
-Tennessee & others- to continue their river trade, which did not help
Atlantic States. A note carried by James Carey (connections unknown- but
a scout and Indian translater)from Senator Blount in Washington . This
caused Blount to be impeached by U.S. Senate, caused problems for Mr.
Chishum, and my grandad 8 times back, Gov. John Sevier of Tennessee.
Also, Jesse Chisolm never drove a cow (Except his milk Cow), but was an
Indian Translater and scout who was hired by Republic of Texas Pres. Sam
Houston to arrange peace parleys with Cherokee and other tribes , first 6
miles south of Waco, then Comanche Peak, once part of Erath or Hood
County. Then this Chisholm travelled for U.S. to arrange treaty parleys.
He then laid out a Freight wagon road from Mud Creek on Red River, then
to Yukon, Okla. and to Kansas for his scaterred frontier stores and
Government supplies for Indians on reservation. This trail was joined by
the Eastern or Texas or McCoy Trail, from San Antonio to McGregor, then
up the Bosque and Brazos crossing at Kimbell Bend., going East
intoJohnson County. That route leaces Waco out. This is what people call
the Chisholm Trail. Sam Houston's second wife in Arkansas - was she a
Rogers or a Chisum???Wasn't Temple Houston of Fredrick , Okla. Sam's son,
and by which wife???His photo graces the Dairy Queen there.
John Chisum of Concho Valley sold herds to Goodnight & Loving or hired
them to drive to Pecos, Tex & north to Colorado and poersonally drove
cattle to Lincoln, New Mexico to Tunstill & McSween & was behind Pat
Garrett being sheriff. There were 3 other Chisums with him some. He
also had two Chisum Trails north nd west out of Tascosa, Texas. There is
today a Lonesome Dove Missionary Baptist Church near Denton County line.
Haven't I seen the Chisum name in Erath County? Most were half Cherokee
Also, who was the Jesse Chisum in Broken Bow, McCurtain County, Oklahoma,
who drove cattle to Illinois across Missouri east of the Shawnee Trail-
or Pig Trail- or Wire Road??? Were any of these related to the Chisums in
Erath County? Who drove cattle through Cranfils Gap? Kuykendalls or
others??and which one drove a herd to Vicksburg, Miss. during Civil War??
