Subject: [ERATH] Re: McElroy/Goad/Sevier- Tipton-
and I will send this to some cousins and friends who may have some more
tidbits on the connections of the above families with roots in Arkansas,
Tennessee, Carpolinas and Texas. .
I remember Herschell Goad was a Deacon and farmer in Venus, Johnson
County, Texas. I think it was his sister who baby sit our kids in
1960's. Joannah Goad and Valentine Sevier were parents of John Sevier,
Valentine ran a Inn- combination of early Hotel and tavern, among other
You mentioned that your families - or one, was involved in Railroad work
and some moved back and forth from Bosque County. Walnut Springs was the
for the Texas Central Railroad Roundhouse , lake, Hospital , shops, and
RR workers had free passes to ride, say, from Walnut Springs to Dublin
on what became Katy RR. Some of the old Buildings were torn down by WPA
workers and used to build older High School Gym, Ag Classroom, 3 rooms
Home Ec Dept, dressing rooms under bleachers, and a spare downstairs
room, besides the Lunch room. The building is gone now.
You mentioned a Tipton Connection in Erath County. Thomas Tipton , wife
Beth, and 3 children live in Hewitt. He is a Deacon where we attend
Church and works out of Waco office of Brazos River Authority and makes
trips across Bosque Arath, and Neighboring Counties.
After I retired , I did some Contract work for Greet America- Discover
Card , and made one stop in Cisco, I think. May have been Eastland . I
stopped at a Convenience store run by an elderly Tipton . When I placed
sinage and Applications, I asked him if he was part of the Tipton Family
of North Carolina who was the sheriff who arrested my ancestor John
His jaw dropped and he smiled and said" Are you one of those Pesky
descendants of John Sevier? " I said , Guilty, and we broke out laughing
and sat down for a cup of Coffee, The Mr Tipton there in early 1800's
was a sheriff just east of the Smokies, when John Sevier was Governor of
Franklin, which failed and caused some to be considered Traitors .
Franklin was east half of Present Tennessee - and west part of North
Seems that Tipton arrested John Sevier- his friend, and took him back
over the Smokies. The Judge called Court to order, and heard the charges
read. Then they recessed for lunch . Sevier was not accompanied by a
deputy, and when all stepped outside, there were some of his sons and kin
on horseback, with one horse with an empty saddle. John Sevier calmly
walked to the horse while others watched, and got on his horse and left
for Knoxville. Case dismissed. Arrest warrant cancelled. They were Rev.
Any input to the above or to Dorotha's letter appreciated.
