Hi folks,
<<<GeoCities, Flashnet, Tripod, all have their drawbacks>>>
And, probably if truth be known not only does AOL have problems but every
other server that is available. We hear about AOL because it is the "biggie"
when it comes to servers.
<<<Our server USIT does not require money or banners>>>
When I first came on TNGenWeb as a CC I contacted USIT by e-mail to find out
if I could use them as the server for the county I CC. I was told that because
I do not live in a state or an area of a state that had "local" numbers for
USIT I would be charged a fee per month for the service (like I pay AOL or
anyone pays a server) and then pay so much each minute I was online, because
of long distance charges, using USIT to do what I had to do with the county I
CC. The long distance charges are because there is not a local number for USIT
in the area where I live.
I am an AOL user and a Rootsweb user. Yes, I have had problems with AOL and
only minor problems with Rootsweb. But, all in all, I consider these minimum
problems considering the time I spend online and uploading pages to the
websites I CC, answering e-mail with the mail-lists and county sites I
coordinate.
I use HOTDOG to edit my pages, and then upload through AOL's FTP. (Thanks to
Bridgett's patience with me when I first came onboard for explainin' this to
me) I have my family webpages on AOL and both of my counties on Rootsweb. So
far, knock on wood, I haven't had that many problems with uploading.
<<<<So the question is, would you folks support this effort and contribute
to the project? >>>>>
I would need to know more before I would support this effort or contribute to
the project. For instance, everyone chips in so much money and we are able to
purchase whatever we need to put TNGenWeb on a server....what happens when it
breaks down? What happens when we have an enormous amount of e-mail coming
through over a short period of time and the server freezes up or whatever it
does? What happens when we have to expand what we have purchased to get up
and going? And, what about CC's that do not live in Tennessee? Would we have
to pay extra to do what we do now to be able to hook up on the server?
Is this going to be a one time deal or are we continually going to have to
chip in to keep TNGenWeb on the internet?
I'm not a technical person when it comes to computers; there is alot that I
don't understand. So, I may be saying stuff here that doesn't make any sense
to people that know computers...if that's the case then correct me and explain
so that we can understand this.
Just trying to understand.
