Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Hi folks,
and excuse me, Fred, for this unofficial note, but since my whereabouts
"could" be construed to be something official:
Whoo Ha! My first litte grandbaby has decided to make his appearance
about 3 weeks early...needless to say we are not ready and I have numerous
little "grandma" chores to do.
He is taking his own sweet time, but should probably be here in the next
24 hours.......
I am doing uploads and general business now, but if I come up missing
please be understanding....I am so excited!

Hi Folks,
Last night the counties on RW B-M, were added to the TNGenWeb Site Search.
Excepting Carroll and Lake, which had some problem I need to check
out...they will be added next weekend with the remainder of the counties.
If you have any problems finding information that should be indexed and is
not, drop me a note. We discovered a site that failed to index because
all the links from the main page were the old tngenweb.usit.com address.
The search engine doesn't follow those links.

Hi folks,
Just one more little task has come to light. If you
have links to the State Coordinator, Bridgett Smith, or those little state
coordinator logos that link to Bridgett, could you please change the
addresses to State Coordinator, Fred Smoot.
If you use the tnsc(a)tngenweb.org you won't have to do it again in two
years.
No big hurry, just whenever you update your main pages, but Bridgett is
still getting a bit of project mail and having to forward it.

I bought FTW Version 6.0 a few months ago, but just installed it
yesterday -- after which my program was virtually unusable it was so
slow when I used the index (over 5 minutes to get a name to come up). I
called Family Tree Maker Tech Assistance, and they advised that they had
learned of a problem for people who have large files (over 30,000 of so
names -- I have 75,000, so I certainly fit into the category <g>). They
have come up with a fix, and it works great. If you use FTW and have a
large file, you should go to Web site:
http://www.familytreemaker.com/60aindex.html
and download the fix file. It is a little under 500K (zipped) and has a
self-extracting feature that makes it very easy to install. I thought I
might save someone else having to stay on "hold" for a LONG time while
on long distance to learn of the fix for this problem.

As Mike says in his reply he has posted an advisory to this list about the
person who is placing these bogus queries on a number of sites. Queries
that are being placed simply to cause him grief.
Mike is the File Manager of the TNGenWeb Archives Digital Library and as
such, I have had a number of occasions to work with him lately regarding
those archives.
He is a dedicated, very helpful and extremely pleasant person to work with,
and I for one, am furious that someone should choose to strike out at him in
this manner. This goes way beyond being petty, it is simply inexcusable.
I am keeping a very close eye on the boards I maintain, and if this
gentleman should post one of these "things" to any of those boards, I too
will be registering a complaint with his ISP.

Today, I (and several others, I notice) got a query in triplicate, to be
put on the Cannon Co. Query page. It was for the "DELOACH Family" in
Carter Co., Tn. Since Carter County is about 200 miles from here, and
the Query had absolutely nothing to do with the Cannon Co. area, I sent
him my usual blast, about what the hey this has to do with Cannon Co.,
etc. Please advise, show connection, etc.
I just got a strange reply from the man, who lives in Mechanicsburg,
PA., and thought I would pass it along to all. Most strange.

Hi Jess,
I just posted a notice to TNGEN-L to disregard any queries that look like
they were posted by me. They were not. They have been posted, using my
name and e-mail address, by Jesse K. Moore, Jr. who is sending bogus
messages all over the place in an attempt to coerce me into taking
unauthorized actions with the Tennessee USGenWeb Archives. His actions
have been reported to the abuse sections of his ISPs.
Sorry for any problems that this has caused.

Hi folks,
It looks like you may all be receiving a DELOACH query, that purports to
be from Javan Micheal Deloach, the host of Unicoi and the file manager
for the TNGenWeb Digital Archives.
Mike says it is not from him but from some other party who wants to be
annoying.
So please delete this query when it arrives in your mailbox.
Thank you,
Nancy

Greetings,
Yesterday, I had received three mailings to my personal e-mail address
from questions(a)twistedhumor.com.
I unsubed here: http://www.twistedhumor.com/
This is turning out to be an across the board affair with many
volunteers in many states being subed to Twisted Humor without their
permission. Probably by someone who is angry with the Project.
I suggest that if you run GenConnect Boards, keep an eye on the
postings.

Hi Everyone,
If you receive any queries that appear to have been posted by me, they are
bogus.
These queries have been posted by "Jesse K. Moore Jr" <jkmoore(a)usa.net>, or
he could be using his address at @usa.net. Jesse is attempting to coerce
me into taking actions with the TNGenweb Archives that are not authorized.
I have filed a nuicance report with the abuse section of his ISPs, and with
RootsWeb.
I am sorry for the inconvenience that this might cause, and hope that the
issue will be resolved soon.
Mike
Apparently there have been a lot of problems with the newer versions of
Family Tree Maker. One of my listers wrote this and I thought it was worth
passing along.
I was having the problem where if I opened Outlook Express first I couldn't
open FTW. The only way to open it then is to reboot. The answer is to open
FTW first and there is no conflict.

Subject: [TNGIBSON-L] BACKUP! BACKUP! BACKUP! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
To all of my fellow genealogy listers -
FAMILY TREE MAKER has some errors in it that are causing me to lose some
of my entries in my family file database. I am also not able to export
my data into a GEDCOM format that would allow me to save it. I may be
forced to re-enter my data before I can confidently use the FAMILY TREE
MAKER program again. (This is where I remind myself that I have 28
years worth of data stored in that database.) Some of you also read
messages earlier this week about several others among us who have
ALREADY LOST ALL OF THEIR DATA from their FAMILY TREE MAKER program.
To make a long story short, I spent the major part of this weekend
trying to fix problems in FAMILY TREE MAKER from error codes. In case
you were wondering, FAMILY TREE MAKER doesn't DO weekends. Fortunately,
I was able to post my problem to their website and other genealogists
who have had similar problems came to my rescue with attempted fixes.
None of the fixes worked, however, one of the attempted fixes did
identify that I have 276 ERRORS in my family file! I am still hopeful
that FAMILY TREE MAKER will respond to my series of messages on Monday.
However, most of the other genealogists have expressed similar
frustration at not being able to get their FAMILY TREE MAKER problems
fixed. So, all I can do is keep my fingers crossed . . . . .
AND
REMIND YOU TO BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP ! ! ! ! ! I would highly
recommend that you make a complete backup of your family file by either
copying your .FTW file or by exporting a GEDCOM file that can be saved
as a backup for later. Or, better yet, do both! Also, make TWO
backups. Keep one at home -- Take the other one to work, a friend's,
a relative's, ANYWHERE but your house! AND DO IT NOW ! ! !
In case any of you are having FAMILY TREE MAKER problems, here is the
FAMILY TREE MAKER site to which all problems are posted:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/errors/
My hope is that in the long run, I will not have to re-enter my data
-- AND that at least we all realize that as wonderful as many thought
FAMILY TREE MAKER was, it is not infallible.
You know, I completely lost my hard drive at my office one time . . .
. THAT was nothing compared to the heart and soul I have put into my
family file database. . . .
