Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

All the lists at RootsWeb will accept messages only from those subscribed
now. I just checked, and she's posted it to TNRoane-L after subscribing.

Is this message (snipped) being sent to all the mail lists and possibly
query pages? She doesn't mention either of my counties.

I got it on Gibson and Wilson. I didn't do anything about it on the Gibson

awww Chip,
Everyone is human...I checked this person and answered her. She is having
trouble getting around tracking her family -- she only has them back to 1920
and is frustrated. I got the nicest thank you. Don't think she even
realized she was causing trouble.
We are bound to get "lurchers" at times but she didn't mean any harm. lol

Nosey Chip did some checking on the AOL account that spammed our mailing
lists. Below you will find her AOL member information. As well you will find
her homepage listed. It has several links to the TnGenWeb. I went to my
listowner utilities to banish her from my list but my wife pleaded her case.
She told me that most people don't understand that it is bad manners to spam
lists. You know she's right. I guess I get caught up in all the commercial
spam and forget that the reason people like this spam is because they've hit
a block wall with their research. I know it's true that most of these people
just don't want to do the legwork but why should I assume that's true in this
case? I think I'm getting hardened in my old age. Thank goodness for my wife
or I'd be the grumpy old 30 something year old in my subdivision.

Hi everyone,
What I've done with some of the archive files for Blount County is
having links to pages on the main county pages. Archive files are text
files. Webpages are HTML pages. I've converted some cemetery files to
text so they can be put in the index but those I haven't had time for
they just put in links to the HTML pages on the county pages.
What you might want to do if you have someone working on a project is
to submit that project to the archives...basically a page saying
"so-in-so is working on putting this online. If you would like to help
them contact them at...."

both sites are up at this time, but the RootsWeb will be the one that I'm

Hi folks,
If anyone is dreading, debating, sighing over adding the include for Usit,
Jim just helped me put together a script on my Linux box that will do a
whole directory in about 1/10 of a second (really)...so now the only time
involved is downloading your pages and uploading them again.
So, if you would like some help, I can do your pages and then send you the
corrected copies so you will never have to fool with them again.
Nancy
I don't forward these things on unless I have checked things out
myself. You definitely need to read up on this one.

There is another virus set to be released on Monday.
It can be very devastating to your computer.
Most of you have probably heard about it already, if not,
go to the address below and read about it and ensure you take the
necessary steps to guard your system. It is transferred by e-mail
attachments so be very careful who you open attachments from.

Hello,
If I remember correctly, when the Archives was set up back in the
beginning of this project, it was for the *county host* to store
records.
The county host pages are not checked before material is added in the
archives. I found a record duplicated in the Archives that I have had on
my page from the beginning of the project.
What if the county host knows that someone is working on a record for
their page and unknown to them, someone else is working on the same
record for the archives? Shouldn't there be some cooridinating?

This came over another state list -- I know Tom & Carolyn would not mind
this being shared with our group as well ......

I agree totally with you on the point of people not knowing how to scroll
down. I tried a line index on the top of my page but that didn't seem to
work. As our pages get bigger we have to look for more creative ways of
helping people find the information. My Union County site is really getting
so large that it spans three servers and even I can't find files half the
time.
So I put a search engine as the very first thing on the page. This is a
Pinpoint engine. Pinpoint is a good choice for this because it reads entire
pages and databases every word on every page. So this means if someone is
looking for a surname (lets say Acuff) all they have to do is search for
Acuff and Pinpoint will give them a list of pages from my site that contain
the name Acuff. And it's the same with Census data. Search for census and it
will return a page containing all my census pages. Then of course all they
have to do is click on one of the links that Pinpoint returns. You can read
more about Pinpoint at:
http://www.pinpoint.netcreations.com
Best of all it's free.
There are other search engines out there like Braveheart.Com and even some
that run from Javascript. But for ease of use Pinpoint is the choice.
Good luck,
Chip
