Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
The below message came through the State Coordinators List. I
doubt any of you link to this site, but thought I would pass this
information on.
It may behoove you to check out your links, I mean actually visit
them, to make sure that they actually link to the sites you thought
they linked to. Apparently porn sites pick up expired domain names
and then use them to their advantage.
Apparently several elementary school teachers in the western states,
had linked up to this site, had not checked their links in sometime for
content and got a very rude awakening when visiting the site.

Jane,
I probably got the same messages from someone supposedly on AOL, only I got
six of them and also got a notice that the Spam Fighter on Rootsweb stopped
the same message from getting on my list.
Think AOL has been having a lot of problems lately. There was an
announcement on the List list the other day that something was wrong. Then
this morning I got four messages, none addressed specifically to me, about
some off the wall reports I supposedly requested. Not so. Have sent
offending messages back to abuse(a)aol.com. And have also notified the people
at my ISP.
Seems most of the SPAM is coming from aol addresses these days. Someone must
have found a way to bypass the spammola detector.

another way to cut down on any SPAM you might receive is
to be sure to click or "unclick" the box that is at the
bottom (the very bottom) of any online order form. This
is where they get permission to sell your name to list
purchasers. And, you never know unless you read it if you
need to click or "unclick", so check to make sure!
You can, without even knowing it, give permission for your
name to be sold!

Hi all,
Info from microsoft on cookies
What you need to know about cookies
Some Web sites store information in a small text file, called a
"cookie," on your hard disk.
Cookies contain information about you and your preferences. For example,
if you inquire about a flight schedule at an
airline's Web site, the site might create a cookie that contains your
itinerary. Or it might only contain a record of which
pages within the site you visited, to help the site customize the view
for you the next time you visit.
Only the information that you provide, or the choices you make while
visiting a Web site, can be stored in a cookie. For
example, the site cannot determine your e-mail name unless you choose to
type it. Allowing a Web site to create a cookie
does not give that or any other site access to the rest of your
computer, and only the site that created the cookie can read
it.
Internet Explorer is set up to allow the creation of cookies; however,
you can specify that you be prompted before a site
puts a cookie on your hard disk, so you can choose to allow or disallow
the cookie; or you can prevent Internet Explorer
from accepting any cookies.
You can specify different settings for different security zones. For
example, you might want to allow Web sites to create
cookies if they are in your Trusted sites or Local intranet zone, prompt
you before creating cookies if they are in your
Internet zone, and never allow cookies if they are in your Restricted
sites zone.
I have received several pieces of e-mail since my post on Geocities pop up
windows. Most of it has been good but some has taken me all wrong. The banner
ad at the top of most Geocities pages cause no errors that I know of. What I
am speaking of are the popup windows that contain the word popup in the URL,
that people have to close to see your page. I have looked around the TnGenWeb
and found that most of you have these turned off and replaced with Geoguide.
Once again Geoguide causes no errors that I know of.
If you want to see an example of a Geocities page that causes no errors check
BFoster's at Anderson County
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ranch/4916
And also Athol's Fosters in Dekalb County
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ranch/3627/
These pages contain the geoguide in place of the full page popup. The Geoguide
is actually quite useful with the navigation bar.
But to say again I am not blasting Geocities, Xoom, Angelfire or any other
free services that sell advertising. It's the way they make money as is my own
Maynardville.Com.
I did try to explain something without getting my point across. (My usual
fate) To see a better description of computer crashes caused by Geocities
popup pages and why they happen visit:
http://freeweb.digiweb.com/entertainment/snicker/geopops.htm
I'm not endorsing their opinions at all but they do explain the problem better
than I can.

Hiya folks,
My best advice is "toss your cookies."
I have a 20 year old here and no matter how I rant and rave I get these
offers of pornographic adventures, usually involving teen age girls.
Last time it might have been me...I got disgusted with a geo cities site
and took the cookies...since then, some porn and a gazillion get rich
quick schemes....
If I delete all my cookie files it stops for awhile.
I delete the spam and to date have killed at least 10 porn vendors e-mail
accounts...
abuse(a)whatever.com
usually works very well.

George et al,
Well, George, I am going to make an assumption here. That assumption is
that when you say "Lincoln Co TN does not consider itself separate from
USGenWeb, technically or otherwise," you are really expressing your own
personal opinion.
Invite you to visit our state home page and at the bottom you will find
links to both the Charter and Bylaws of TNGenNet Inc.
http://www.tngenweb.org/
While I believe that these two documents do make us "technically (and
legally) separate, the discussion of these matters should occur on our
TNCHAT mailing list.
Therefore, I will respond more fully there, but not right away. I am
about to go stepping out with my wife, and she rates higher than
political missives.

Fred,
Just to go on the record, Lincoln Co TN does not consider itself
separate from USGenWeb, technically or otherwise.
George
Denise et al,
I receive about 20 commercial e-mails per day. About 50% are for porn
sites.
I just delete them, because I am usually the only user of this computer.
Here is how I believe I got on their list. I do not accept cookie files.
And I don't visit porn sites. But last summer my daughter and her "half"
brother visited me. The young man (age 15) asked if he could use the
computer at the end of the evening. Sure, that's OK with me. And I told
him not to accept the cookie files.
About a week after their visit, I stared to receive the porn mail. Many
said they had been sent because I had been to their web site.
Ahhh, a clue.
So I went to my browser's cache file and opened some graphic files.
Because I am ever the skeptic, I first opened the files that that were
dated when the young man used the computer. I found skateboard graphics
galore - but then I found . . . well you know what I found. Do you thing
that he had accepted cookie files?
I do.
I reckon it is just like buying from a mail order house. As soon as one
gets your address, they sell it and soon you are inundated with
catalogs.

Did anyone else get an advertisement for hard porn? It was not
addressed to me but someone at aol.com and I got 3 copies. It must have
come from some mailing list I'm on but I'm not sure which one. Luckily
I was the first to get the mail and not my 12 yr old son. I sent a note
to abuse(a)burst.com which is where it said it came from.

Civil War --- how did enlistment work? Was it for the duration? I didn't
think so.
I thought it was and in and out thing, enlist, meet muster call, mustered
out if injured, real loose.
Does anyone know. There must be a neat URL for this that I can pass on to
my enquirer.
