Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Hello everybody!
Thanks goes to all those who venture upon the Anderson County TNGenWeb
page! I have had over 2,200 hits to the page now.
I now have posted the Anderson County section of the Goodspeed's history
to the page. I will be updating over the next couple of days to complete
the section on the biographies. Just keep on checking back! If you have
NOT met the county host yet, go to the bottom of the page and there is a
section about her where it tells who maintains the page! --Ya'll better go
meet up with her!! --And let know ya been there! Send her a Valentine
message! Happy Sweetheart's Day everybody...

Actually, it's often a period even earlier than that...Texas, for
example, started in the pension business in the 1890's. A lot of those
vets were already dead by 1920.

Recently I was helping a person from Texas, compose a Query for his
Civil War Ancestor, from Cannon Co, Tn. It turns out that this man
actually lived at Pikeville, at the time of enlistment. But, during our
correspondence, back & forth, I discover that sometime after the War, he
like many others left, & went West. He applied and received a pension
from the State of Texas, in 1930, ever though he was from Tennessee. He
is not listed in "Tn. Confederate Pension Apps" (Sistler) or other Tn.
Reference works, that I have.
Maybe everyone else was aware of this, but it was news to me. So, if you
can't find your "Tennessee Vet", you might try the State where he
resided, in 1920-30. Lots of folks left here, during our period of
"Yankee reeducation" AKA reconstruction.

Phil et al,
The "Mountain District" of White Co was not in White Co. -- White County
was in the Mountain District.
Check out the map at this URL and note the big green blob in the middle
of the state.
http://www.tngenweb.usit.com/tnland/survdist.htm
The green blob is the Mountain District.
>Can someone please advise me on how to place the following land purchase in
>terms of current geography:

>62 acres (1st Dist on Calf Killer, 9th Sec & 1st Range,
This is a more interesting question than the first.
When the Mountain District was formed in 1827, it encompassed almost all
of thr 3rd Surveyor's District plus other counties. The western part of
the Mountain District fell inside the old 1st Surveyor's District. This
1st District was originally the North Carolina Military Reservation.
The 3rd District was set up with a section (actually should have been
called township) number for each section. 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.
The 1st District was setup with a range and section number for each
township. In the 1st District, the ranges ran north to south. The
Sections ran east to west. As the lines crossed, they would form a six
mile square. (Called a section, but again shoud be a township.) (An
incomplete section would be called a fractional section)
OK, pencil and paper time.
Draw a line running southward from the point where the Cumberland River
enters Tennessee. Scale off the "six" mile marks. Section 1 at the
north.
You will see that Section 9 is to the north of junction of the Caney
Fork and Rocky River.
What appears to a problem occurs. Section 9 of Range 1 of the 1st
District is to the west of the Calf Killer. In fact, the Calf Killer is
totally in the 3rd District.
Now how can this be?
The answer probably is this. The original survey probably said something
like "the waters of Calf Killer" or "the drains of the Calf Killer" or
"the west waters". . . So from the meger information presented, I would
guess that the tract in question is in the old 1st District, on the west
waters of the Calf Killer, perhaps a little s/w of Sparta.

had not heard from a private e-mail requesting their snailmail addresses.
It has now been close to a month since I put the message out to begin with,
I have not heard from Knox County or Weakley County.
Knox and Weakley will go up for adoption if I haven't heard from those 2

6. Queries and Surname- Take a look and find a new cousin.
Regards to all,
Diane and Danene
Sumner Co. TNGenWeb http://www.tngenweb.usit.com/sumner
We are going to be linking up several new county sites, and in going over
their pages I have noticed a common error. I've also been surfing around in
other counties as well, and somehow the same error seems to crop up.
This is just to remind you that we cannot use the word "GenWeb" by itself,
it needs to be TNGenWeb, not TN GenWeb or Tennessee GenWeb. Same applies to
USGenWeb -- no spaces please <G>
Please make sure all of your links are correct to any TNGenWeb county you
have on your page, if you have a link to a parent and/or neighboring
county. I know it is tuff to keep up with, however, be relieved you don't
have to keep up with the County Select page <G>
Also when you go to see if you have linked a county correctly make sure you
have the following required links on your main county page:
TNGenWeb main page
TNGenWeb County Select Page (USGenWeb requires a link back to the state
site that contains the list of counties, if not on main page)
USGenWeb (http://www.usgenweb.org -- or .com -- or .net -- they all work)
To Post a query
To View Queries
About TNGenWeb (http://www.tngenweb.usit.com/genweb.htm) (some of the pages
I've been to have a link back to an old area on the main page, not there
now and hasn't been for many, many moons)
Another item I saw was when hosts do link back to the main page the linking
language is "Back to Tennessee Genealogy" -- our project site's name is
TNGenWeb please use it, thanks.
Again, our counters are now working, if you did not get the message how to
install and get them working let me know, will repost.
Just for your information, I do not know if you realize that our space on
USIT, if we were billed for it, would run us about $650 per month. This is
how much our site is being visited each day, and how much information our
visitors are receiving from us. An eye opener huh?

I DO have some knowledge of USIGS. Since I was not one of the paranoid ones
who flamed the leaders of USGenWeb so unmercifully when the mere mention of
organizing slipped through the fingers of our former glorious leader; and
since my stated philosophy from the beginning was that I was here for my
ancestors, that genealogy was for sharing, and that some amount of money
would be needed in the future to do the job in the way we want it done; I
was asked by the ones who got together to form USIGS to join them. What
happened was that they sent me a message stating that they needed me, and
that I was to get off my duff and come join them.
>Dear friends,

TNGenWeb falls under USGenWeb. USIGS and USGenWeb are totally different
organizations, ie: Boy Scouts of America and Boy's Club.
>
>So, just what is the USIGS?
>
This is to be on the opening page of USIGS when I get it finished,
hopefully, this weekend.
The people of USIGS are genealogists who want to see the maximum possible
number of primary source documents online and accessible to Family and other
Historians on the web for free.
We are doing this through:
Recognition of those projects with primary source records already online
for free access
(such as we just did with your Sumner County TNGenWeb page. And
congratulations, miladies!)
Encouragement of other projects both online and off to persuade them to
copy primary source records and to post them online for free access
Education of individuals and projects in all aspects of the process of
finding, copying, and posting primary source records online
(including documentation of those sources, as our Siggy Committee just did
with your Sumner County)
Acquisition of funds to support ourselves and other projects in all
aspects of finding, copying, posting, and storing primary source documents
(Sorry, but the USGenWeb and the TNGenWeb cannot do this! I won't even say,
"at this time" because, I know that they will never get organized, as such.)
Storage of documentation, web pages, databases, and archives which are
generated in all aspects of the operation of our organization
1. Recognition
Registry of projects
(We are maintaining a list of all web pages that have raw data online for
free access for genealogy and history research. This is a place where you
can go and find out about such projects as the Military Records Project, the
Tombstone Project, and the Census Project. I know you have heard of those
USGenWeb Projects, but have you heard that the complete US Atlas of 1895 is
online?
http://www.ismi.net/lcmigw/1895.htm )
2. Encouragment
The SIGGY Award - soon to be displayed on the Sumner County TNGenWeb
page.
Articles in the Signal (the USIGS Newsletter)
3. Education
The SIGGY Committee
The Education Committee
4. Funding
Acquisition (of government grants - for government grants, you need
accountability, as well as organization. The slightest mention of
requirements or standards or accountability on the USGenWeb lists brings all
sorts of flames, and cries that, "we don't need any stinking Web Police!"
Dispensation (Who will get the funds - Here it gets really sticky - it
is obvious that the ones who should get the funds for the equipment to do
the census records should be the ones already doing them, and maintaining
sush great standards - the USGenWeb! - Oooops! Who would make the reports to
the USIGS and the IRS about the accountability of use of funds? Megan -
sorry, she is not authorized to handle any funds on behalf of the USGenWeb
per a previous flame war! - Oooops! Where would the census records be
stored, and who would have control over them? The USGenWeb archives? - We
can't even now convince everybody to send copies of the material into the
archives. And that won't work either, because the governing body of the US
grants, states that the products should go into an archives that is owned
and managed by the organization getting the grant. Just try and convince
USGenWebbers to send copies of their matierials to the USIGS archives.
ROTFLMAO!!!!! So we will probably have to get our own volunteers for some
things, do what the USGenWeb cannot do due to lack of funds, and link the
two projects together with html hotlinks.)
5. Storage
Web Site
Virtual Library (We will have to have our own according to government
mandate.)

for some of us, ie: MYSELF, we have been active in web genealogy for more

Don't want to be tied to the USGenWeb, except insofar as we are able to put

us, to act as members of the USGenWeb Board of Directors. And I want it to

I am afraid that is somewhat true. You have none of the responsiblities of
an organization and none of the privelages of an organization, but you can
still be sued as an ipso facto organization, just because you do exist.
If you want to send flames, plese send them to me and not to the TNGEN-L

Dear friends,
Recently, I sent a message: "the United States Internet Genealogical
Society has received notice from the IRS that our application as a Non
Profit Organization has been approved "
Now I have received a few questions similar to the one following:
"So, does the TnGenWeb fall under the USIGS?"
My answer: To my knowledge, NO.
So, just what is the USIGS?
This folowing is from one of their people:
"USIGS is made up of individuals who saw the need for a non-profit
organization, and saw the impossiblity of ever making one out of the
USGenWeb. People who suggest that the USGenWeb become organized legally
are destined to die in flames. :-) "
Next, who are the folks that make up the USIGS?
Just check the list of USIGS Charter Members at:
http://www.usigs.org/members/charter.htm
Here you will see some names that you will know from the USGenWeb and
various STATEGenWebs.
What does the USIGS intend to accomplish?
Here is part of message that I received, there is enough here to show
the good intentions of USIGS:
"We are trying to get things done, such as getting the equipment to
properly do the census project. How would you like to see the whole 1850
census on-line? Well, the USGenWeb is doing it. How would you like to
see it set up so that you could click on a family and immediately see a
picture of the census page where that family is recorded? [XXX] has the
machine. USGenWeb cannot afford it. USGenWeb could not even accept
donations for the purpose of buying or renting such a machine. USIGS is
working on it. We have already had our first meeting with the guys from
[XXX], and we have a working relationship with them. The machine will
accept microfilm, and scan a page, and save the image to disk at the
touch of a button, just like a flat bed scanner."
Now, if we search their web site, we see that they are working on the
non-profit corporation status. It seems that they will file in
California. http://www.usigs.org/
>From what I know of the the USIGS, they are "A-OK!"
They are set up to do good work and have stated doing it.
When they finish their non-profit corporation status, they will still be
a separate enity from the USGenWeb.
In fact, the USGenWeb and all the separate STATEGenWebs appear to be
just smoke and mirrors, with no real legal foundations.

Hi everyone,
In an ongoing effort to clean up our directory structure on the USIT
server, I will be moving county queries out of the main query directory
and into county sub-directories.
Example: http://www.tngenweb.usit.com/bledsoe/queries/bledqry.htm
The archived queries will go with the main query page and will have the
links checked/changed so that everything works correctly.
I can notify you when your files have been moved so you can change the
link on your main county page. However, it takes me about 60 seconds to
also change your main page link and eliminates the need for you to update

else on your page will be touched) please drop me a note saying: Okay to
change link on CountyName.

The biggest of the 2 awards by for is the SIGGY award. This award is given
out by the United States Internet Genealogical Society and it is very hard
to come by. This award isn't just for the prettiness of your site, nor the
content per se. Content is what the USIGS is looking for, but Danene and
Diane had to provide sources to the society of where they obtained their
information from. In otherwords they had to document their sources (sound
familiar to genealogists, LOL). That is just one of the requirements, I
have looked to see what else they had to go through.
I think the SIGGY is a very prestigeous award, as it isn't determined by
just one or two people visiting your site and saying "hey this looks good,
let's give them an award" type deal. You definitely earn.
Way to Go you two !!
The 2nd award, apparently is a new one that has just been created from a
site called Tennessee Connections and I guess this is the first award they
have presented, it is called the Award of Excellence. I don't know what
the criteria for winning this award is, but am sure these folks meet and
surpass it. The note from the site read:
>Your site is an excellent resource for Tennessee Genealogy, and am pleased
to >present you with the TC "Award of Excellence."
Again, my CONGRATULATIONS goes to these two fine hosts, and shows "it can
be done."
BTW, neither host lives in TN, or even near each other. One lives in the
State of Washington and the other in Oklahoma.

For those of you on the USIT server:
Our counters our now back in service (forgoing any bugs that might turn up
<VBG>).
On the page you want your counter installed you need to insert this code:
<!--#exec cgi="/cgi-bin/tncount.cgi"-->
You can add it to the file where the counts should be placed and wrap it in
whatever you want, for an example:
You are the {code} researcher to this site since XXXXXXXXX
You need to send the relative URL (e.g. /bledsoe/nameoffile.htm) and initial
counts (where you would like for it to begin with) for the page that needs
to have a counter to Jim Cole at greyleaf(a)amnix.com
PLEASE NOTE:
You can NOT repeatedly reload your page to see if the counter is working.
After the counter has been hit by a given IP address, it will not increment
for that IP address again until a different one has hit the counter. You
should just periodically visit your page over a couple days to convince
yourself that it is working.
Have fun.
