Hi folks,
I have had a request regarding research services in Williamson Co.
Is there a procedure for such requests through TNGenWeb?
If this is not a problem, is anyone interested in doing research for this
person? I do not live in TN, so I can't do the research.

Hello -
Fred, I agree with most of your discourse on 'Cumberland Mountains'. I'd
like to add another perspective.
Most of my people (within the last century) are from Morgan, Scott,
Cumberland, Fentress, and Roane counties. They always spoke of 'the
mountain' in two ways:
- If they were from the 'hill and valley' region, it was the Cumberland
Plateau.
- If they were from the Plateau, they specifically referred to Cumberland
Mountain.
Keep in mind that there is a mountainous region at the borders of Anderson,
Scott, Morgan, and Roane counties that is another area to consider. Among
these peaks is 'Frozen Head', the highest peak between the Smokies and the
Rockies.
As we can see, the 'Cumberland Mountains' is a rather vague term, but one
with certain prime locations for starting a search.
As for 'The Homesteads', my father lived in the 'Homesteads' just south of
Crossville. Part of my overall family history project is to document a bit
of the history/politics that lead to the establishment of that unique
project.
Keep in touch!
Dennis Rowland

Hi y'all,
The counters are being worked on between the coughs and wheezes of the
programmer, so it might be a week or so.
In the meantime, if you will send me the numbers that were last seen on
your counters, (before the infamous 0s and 1s) I will drop them into a
file for Jim.

Hey guys come on...
What is wrong with attendance is that (in general) not enough new information is posted quick
enough. I would agree that TN is far above average in volunteer effort and support, but there needs
to be something more than checking up on Query's every couple of months to draw people back.
We need more censuses, cemetery transcriptions, courthouse documents transcribed and put online
quicker. I know it is hard to get volunteers, and maybe we should ask more. My humble suggestions:
1. on index site and in more visable places ask for volunte
2. We all some of the major "players" doing genealogy in our counties, ask them
3. Send an e-mail to all your queries, to check links & ask them (used this a lot, & to inform of
major changes)
This is just my opinion, but I surf around the US GenWeb too and this is what I run into. There are
counties I do not even bother going to anymore, because there is nothing new except queries for 6
mos. or a year.

There is no doubt that the hidden gems such as Van Buren and Grundy
Counties are on the Cumberland Plateau.
On a humid August day, ya just can't beat the view and cool breezes you
can enjoy from Beersheba Springs in Grundy.
These two counties are at the western edge of the "Mountain". Down below
is Warren Co. at the western base of the mountain.
Nashville is not on the plateau, but rather the Cumberland River
watershed. Crossville is on the plateau. But remember, while some of the
eastern counties of Middle Tennessee are on the mountain, much of Middle
Tennessee is not.
I could go on with this, but just to make your life easy, here is two
places to check.
TNGenWeb County Home Pages = "Typography"
And good ol' Goodspeed's "History of Tennessee".
There is a genealogy publication called "Upper Cumberland" which covers
White County and somewhat to the North. I have not seen this book, but
if you have an interest, try Fred Clark at: clark(a)BLomand.Net
Is any body out there knowledgeable about "Homesteading on the
Cumberland"? FDR, WPA, era. Crossville area I think. We need to get
something covering this subject posted to our "The Land of Our
Ancestors"
page.

Drifting back to 1940 and the 6th grade - I've always considered the Middle
Tennessee Area as the Cumberland Plateau. Crossville in in Cumberland Co.
Nashville is on both the Tennessee and Cumberland River. And the words
Cumberland Plateau are stamped across Van Buren County in my atlas.
Where's an old fashioned "geography" teacher?

Cumberland Mountain
Written in the singular, as if there was one mountain. Refers to the
Cumberland Plateau. Not useful as a specific landmark. The Cumberland
Plateau was called "the Wilderness" by the pioneers.
Click on this:
http://www.tngenweb.usit.com/tnland/survdist.htm
Have your graphics on, the big green section is the old "Mountain
District" which covered much of the "Cumberland Mountain"
The was a very unruly plateau, as it managed to sneak across both the
state lines, north and south.

Hello Everyone,
None of the counters are working right now.
We are on a completely different site now and the maintenance is being
handled by our own programmer.
Jim is working on gettin new ones set up and when they are ready, you will
be able to set the numbers back to what you believe them to have been,
plus a few.
Unfortunately, he is very sick right now. Must be a computer "virus."
We will keep you updated and let you know when they are ready...just keep
your numbers in mind or maybe written down somewhere.

What about the quarterly (or whatever) by the state genealogy society? come
on someone, give this half-heimers brain some help - anyway, it's more like
a magazine than a quarterly and has good history articles in it.

Excellent job! I just tried the query system and it worked perfect. It's
fast and the html format is excellent I'll get my links to it setup and it
should increase our query requests.
Again, nice job and many thanks for your long hours.
