Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
The new autobot for our query system is just about in place. What is
needed now is for those CC's that are NOT DOING THEIR OWN QUERIES to
contact Nancy Cole (ncole(a)coffey.com), and give the name and address of the
person who IS DOING them. If you do not respond, your queries will come to
you by default. If you are handling queries for a catagory other than a
current county, you need to send your information to Nancy also.
Right now this seems to be the only hold up as to getting this up and
running, so it is important that you notify Nancy with this information ASAP.

Hi everyone,
I signed Blount County up for a mailing list if anyone else is
interested. I'll let you know how much interest there is after a couple
of months. Loudon, Sevier, and perhaps Knox counties are very closely
related to Blount so those counties might want to link to the list. If
so email me and I'll send you the information.
Does anyone know the new address for the TN Roots Mailing List? If so,
could you send it...mine is outdated!

Diane and all:
It would have been nicer if I would have spelled Tim's last name correctly <G>
Tim's last name is HITT not Hite ::sigh:: am truly sorry, must pay closer
attention when composing these things in the middle of the night.
Now to go change the county list page.

Bridgett,
Thanks for letting us know. What a nice way to welcome new people.
Diane
Hi everyone,
We have new people joining our project.
Adopting Cheatam County will be Tim Hite (teh(a)aeneas.net). Tim is with the
MOGenWeb Project so he has an understanding of how things work on the
National level. His current page for Chariton County MO is located at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/mocharit/
David Snow has promised a page up for Stewart County by Thanksgiving and
working with him in this endeavor is his new co-host Jan Philpot
(philpotj(a)kih.net). Jan is a librarian in Stewart County (I hope I have
that right).
David also has Houston County and as with Stewart he has a cohost for that
county also, Susan Gore (skg(a)matthew.cumberland.org). Susan is the
Librarian and Archivist for the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Memphis.
Tim, Jan and Susan welcome to the TNGenWeb project and feel free to post
any questions you have to the list. There are many of us here who are
willing to help others who need it.

Our regional list, DanvilleCrossing-L, which covers Stewart,
Houston, Humphreys, Benton & Henry Counties has been quite
successful. The majority of folks on this list are not on TNROOTS as
they do not have in interest in the vast majority of the posts.
These counties are small and do not have a large population base,
but the number of individuals throughout the country whose ancestral
families came from or past through these counties is quite large.
They typically are not interested in the other areas of Tennessee as
these counties were their destinations from North Carolina,
Virginia, etc., before their families moved on to Texas, Missouri, etc.
There are ebbs & flows to the posting traffic. Weekends are the
heaviest as you would expect. Mid-week is kinda dead. I've noticed
that although we still have "lurkers" most folks post, unlike the
larger lists. I've also noticed a "sense of family" amongst the
participants.
However, there still is a desire & demand for specific county
information & communication, so we have opened a "chat room" and are
scheduling specific times & topics on a county basis in order to
fill this demand.
Anyway, works for us along the lower Tennessee River.

I've been to a few of the counties, just to get a feel of what everyone is
doing. I have noticed that several people still have the link "Celebrating
the 200th Birthday of Tennessee in 1996" active. This link no longer works
and needs to be removed.
On the pages that I've helped people with I just took the link off and
added the line:

There are pros and cons on this issue. There was a list established for
Greene County sometime last summer [not by me, by someone else who asked my
permission before establishing the list]. Although I would have rather seen
an "Upper E TN Regional" type of mailing list, this list was created.
I also belong to TNRoots, and when TNGreene-L was first brought online,
there was some cross posting, but not a great deal. About a month ago, I
noticed that the postings to TNGreene has been on the decline. I do not
know if it is that time of the year, as other lists I belong to also seem
to be on the wane, or what the reason is for this decline. However, during
it's peak, many people found information that might not have been found
otherwise.
There are a couple of people on the TNGreene list, that are busy with other
things, and did not want the mass of TNROOTS people to know that they would
do lookups for others. But easily handled the load from the smaller list.
There are many of us whose ancestors hit an area and stayed put, mine are
one of them. In this respect the specific list was more beneficial than
the overall list. Personally, I gained more information from the few
months on the TNGreene list than I did in the 2 years I've been on the
TNROOTS list.
All of this is from a personal point of view of course, and this issue with
it's pros and cons was debated heavily on the TNRoots list when Kay Rockett
posted the idea to the list for TNGreene.
On the other hand, I belong to many mailing lists pertaining to genealogy,
many of which are of a general nature, and know the feeling when I get a
message that someone has posted to each and every list that I belong to --
but that is what a delete key is for <G>.
Take care,
Bridgett

I, for one do not have time to maintain a County list. I do not think it is
needed. I don't belive there would be that many that would sign up for a
list in the small counties. Some of the larger counties maybe but not the
smaller ones.

Does each county really need it's own mailing list? Do we have the
readership to support this? Reason being is that each county having it's
own mailing list could easily dilute say the Tenn Genealogy Mail-list. Many
times the "cross-county-lines" assistance is what is needed. Or would the
mailing lists become nothing more than duplicate messages, by that I mean
the same ones posted in the county's mail-list and the Tenn Genealogy
Mail-list.

I can give you the tag, and probably someone else will, HOWEVER, it doesn't
work with all browsers. It is called a "netscapism" basically that is
about the only browser it works well on. Sometimes it will work on MSIE, I
think, but not too often.
Fred Smoot and I have just been discussing this, he might write in and tell
you the problems he has encountered when trying to use it.

The last Question of the day was so much fun, here's another one.
How do you setup an email me tag that sets up the Subject line for the
writer?
For example, on a lookup page at the 1830 Census, when a person is
asked to email me with their lookup, I'd like to make the Subject line
say "Blount Co. 1830 Census Lookup". How do you do that?
The CD lookup page used to do that(wish I'd looked) ... they've got a
form to fill out now.
The Benton & Henry County and Danville Crossing WebSites are back
online at their original URLs. The Benton County Site is complete,
but the Henry County Site is 2 updates behind. I will re-load them
shortly.
Please note that I will be moving this sites to a more "stable"
server in the near future, either "ATT Net" or "Rootsweb", with a
"mirror" to the other. I will keep you posted when the new URLs are
ready.
Thanks for your patience.

Dear Mr Smoot --
TSLA has indexes (on microfilm) of the Tennessee death
records for the years 1908-1912 and 1914-1946. Some of
the larger communities in Tennessee kept their own birth and
death records; we also have indexes to some of these
records.
For information on having TSLA search the death indexes,
please check the following webpage:
