Walter L. Hollyfield
FERGUS FALLS, Minn. -- Walter "Walt" Lonzo Hollyfield, 79, of Fergus Falls,
died peacefully Monday, December 19, 2005, at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus
Falls.
Mr. Hollyfield was born on May 25, 1926 in Elizabethton, Tenn., the son of
John and Edna Moody Hollyfield. Walter grew up in the community of Valley
Forge, Tenn., where he attended school. He worked as a welder's helper and an
apprentice machinist in Elizabethton.
He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942, spending 28 months stationed in
the South Pacific. He was discharged in 1944 in San Diego, Calif., where he met
his future wife, Cecile Thompson. He returned to Elizabethton where he
continued to live until 1946, when he married Cecile in San Diego, Calif. He
then worked for the U.S. Navy Hospital in California.
The couple moved to Crookston and Walter began working for Otter Tail
Power. During his career with Otter Tail Power, the couple resided in
Ortonville, Fergus Falls, and Milbank. In 1988, Walter retired as a Power Plant
Technician Foreman from Otter Tail Power Company in Fergus Falls after a 40-
year career.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, V.F.W. Post No. 612, and Lake Region
Amateur Radio Club. He enjoyed fishing and amateur radio. Over the years, Walt
took correspondence courses in radio and plant engineering, as well as earning
a number of various licensures.
He was a beloved father, loving grandfather and great-grandfather.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Cecile, who died on August 30,
1999; and a brother, James Roy Hollyfield, who died in Korea.
Survivors include three daughters, Betty Jo (Robert) Ambler of Minneapolis,
Nancy (Lloyd) Grahn of Grey Eagle and Jean Deal (special friend, Ivan Toso) of
Fergus Falls; two grandchildren, Shane (Kris) Grahn of Foxboro, Wis., and Tina
(Jim) Lockbaum of Belle Plaine; three great-grandchildren, Khia Berg Lockbaum,
Matthew and Trevor Grahn; a brother, William Ray Hollyfield, Bay Minette, Ala.;
a half brother and three half sisters.
A graveside service will be held in the spring of 2006 at First Lutheran
North Cemetery, Fergus Falls. Condolences may be sent to Jean Deal at 1344
