John Barnett
John Barnett, 77, 114 Old Charity Hill Road, Elizabethton, died Wednesday,
December 7, 2005, at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center.
Mr. Barnett was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Arvil and
Hassie Hughes Barnett. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by
a son, Johnny Barnett, five brothers, Omar, Clyde, Clarence, Ford and Sanford
Barnett, two sisters, Mary Vance and Martha Hilman, and a grandson, Jason
Barnett.
Mr. Barnett was retired from the Guard Force at North American Rayon
Corporation after 51 years of service. He had served as a coach with the Little
League and Babe Ruth Teams for 25 years. He was a member of Keenburg Free Will
Baptist Church and had served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Campbell Barnett; a daughter and son-in-
law, Anna Jean and Dwayne Calhoun, Elizabethton; two sons and a daughter-in-
law, Lamont and Brenda Barnett, Elizabethton, and Rusty Barnett, Hampton; a
daughter-in-law, Rene Barnett, Elizabethton; two brothers, Buster Barnett, Roan
Mountain, and Junior Barnett, Johnson City; two sisters, Margie Williams,
Johnson City, and Stacy Morgan, Roan Mountain; eight grandchildren, Hannah,
Mary, Jessica, Brandon, Jennifer, Jeremy, Marsha and Amy; and a great-grandson,
Gage. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Mr. Barnett will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday,
December 9, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Dwayne Calhoun, minister,
officiating. Music will be provided by Missy Parker, Angie Rowe and Bill Jones.
Graveside services and interment will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 10, in
the Captain Nelson Cemetery, Roan Mountain, with Military Honors conducted by
the VFW Post No. 2166. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the
funeral home at 12 noon Saturday, will be Jeremy Barnett, Brandon Barnett,
Steve Jones, Bill Jones, Russell Harrison and Tom Parker. Honorary pallbearers
will be the former baseball players and coaches of the Little League and Babe
Ruth Teams, The Guard Force of North American Rayon Corporation, the doctors
and employees of James H. Quillen VA Medical Center, his church family and
friends and neighbors. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday
at the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence. To those who
prefer, memorials may be made in memory of Mr. Barnett to the Building Fund,
Hampton Christian Church, 810 Deerfield Lane, Hampton, TN 37658. Family and
friends will assemble at the funeral home at 12 noon Saturday to go to the

Shirley A. Barnett
Shirley Ann Hughes Barnett, 60, 206 Duck Branch Road, Roan Mountain, died
at her residence Tuesday, December 6, 2005.
Mrs. Barnett was born in Banner Elk, N.C., and was the daughter of the late
Carl and Bonnie Barnett Hughes. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in
death by two brothers.
Mrs. Barnett was a homemaker and a member of Cove Creek Presbyterian
Church.
Survivors include her husband, Claude Barnett, of the home; three sons and
two daughters-in-law, Chris and Jackie Barnett, John and Marsha Barnett and
Tony Barnett, all of Roan Mountain; five grandchildren, Josh Hughes, Paige
Barnett, Dustin Barnett, Megan Barnett and April Williams; two brothers, Reece
Hughes and Tommy Hughes, both of Roan Mountain; five sisters, Bobbie Gouge,
Jackie Street, Sandi Henson, Anita Hughes and Hester Barlow, all of Roan
Mountain; a special sister-in-law, Mit Barnett, and brother-in-law, T.V.
Barnett; several nieces, nephews and great-nieces; and special friends, Joyce
and Brenda Potter and Wanda Cooper.
Funeral services for Mrs. Barnett will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday,
December 8, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Rev. Daniel Blevins and Rev. John
L. Stockton officiating. Music will be provided by the Cove Creek Presbyterian
Church Choir. Graveside services and interment will be at 2 p.m. Friday,
December 9, in the Miller-Barnett Family Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be
Mark Birchfield, Shane Street, Troy Hughes, Wade Odom, Sammy Bartlett, Dustin
Barnett, Brian Gouge, Nick Oaks and Cory Garfield. Honorary pallbearers will be
Clarence Barnett, Stanley Bowers, T.V. Barnett and friends of the church. The
family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday,
prior to the service hour. Friends may call at the residence at anytime.
Pallbearers, family and friends will assemble at the cemetery at 1:50 p.m.
