Charlotte Hope S. Sheppard
Charlotte Hope S. Sheppard was born on June 26, 1924 in Elizabethton, Tenn.
After a long battle with cancer she passed away on Sunday, January 22, 2006, in
Johnson City, Tenn.
She was preceded in death by her father, Roy B. Smith; her mother, Etta
Kate Hensley Smith; her stepmother, Bertha Payne Smith; and her first husband,
Stanford J. Potter.
Mrs. Sheppard was a homemaker and was previously employed by United Inter-
Mountain Telephone Company, Elizabethton, and retired from King's Department
Store, Johnson City, in 1961. She was a member of the United Methodist Women's
Circle Number Three at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church and a member of
the Second Friday Bridge Club. She also loved playing golf.
She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 41 years, James T.
Sheppard Sr.; a son, Stanford J. Potter Jr. and wife Linda of Bristol, Tenn.; a
stepdaughter, Steva Williams and husband Bill of Suffolk, Va.; a stepdaughter,
Patricia Jones and husband Lee of Elizabeth City, N.C.; a stepson, James T.
Sheppard Jr. and wife Lyle of Raleigh, N.C.; two sisters, Marie Hodge and Katie
Williams, both of Elizabethton; a niece, Tonya Ann Smith, Elizabethton; a
nephew, Phil McQueen, Johnson City; a sister-in-law, Grace Kirk, Columbia,
S.C.; a sister-in-law, Pat Scofield and husband Fred of Clearwater, Fla.; four
grandchildren, Courtney, Ashley, Lindsey and Taylor; and two stepgrandsons,
Justin and Jarrett Hayes.
The funeral service for Mrs. Sheppard will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday,
January 24, in the Morris-Baker North Chapel with Rev. Byron Taylor
officiating. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday,
January 25, at Monte Vista Memorial Park in Johnson City. Everyone will meet at
the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday to go to the cemetery. Active
pallbearers will be Dr. Phil Walters, Phil McQueen, Bill Williams, Lee Taylor
Jones Jr., Bill Breeding and Fred Brandt. Honorary pallbearers will be Fred
Scofield, Dr. W.C. Kirk Jr., Dr. Tony Haley, Dr. William Kincaid, Dr. Janet
Drake, Dr. Paul Brown, Jim Horton and J.W. Conrey. The family will receive
friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral chapel and other times at the
residence. The family wishes to recognize and thank the staff of McLeod Cancer
Center, John Lawson Group, ETSU Physicians and Associates, the 3400 wing of
Johnson City Medical Center, Wilson Home Health Care and Johnson City Medical
Center Hospice Service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Munsey
Memorial Methodist Church, 201 East Market Street, Johnson City, TN 37601.
