JOHN SUTTON
John Sutton applied for pension in Rhea County, Tennessee in 1833 when he
was 82 years of age. He enlisted in Georgetown District, South Carolina, where
he lived in 1775 and was with South Carolina troops under Captains Wise and
Speed and Colonel Thompson, and with North Carolina troops under Colonel Lewis
when he lived in Richmond County, North Carolina. He was in the Siege of
Savannah and in the battle of Eutaw Springs. He moved to Tennessee about 1795
and was living in Meigs County in 1840. He was killed September 5, 1843, about
eight miles from Knoxville where he had walked to secure his pension. He married
August 24, 1791, Elizabeth Hodges. His wife survived him and applied for pension
in Meigs County in 1845 when she was 75 years of age. Their children were: Anne,
born 1798; Elizabeth, born 1800; Codilla, born 1803; John Pierce, born 1805;
James Kinney, born 1809, and Polly born 1812. The widow's application states
that he was "killed for his pension."
