NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, September 30, 1910
SAMUEL F. PARROTT TAKEN BY DEATH
Atlanta Constitution, the 27th inst.
Samuel Fain Parrott, part owner of the Piedmont hotel, president of the
Atlanta Compress Company and one of the most prominent railroad men in the
South, died at the Elkin Sanitarium last night at 7:45 o'clock, after a
lingering illness. Although Mr. Parrott had been in poor health since last
May, he was not considered dangerously ill until about three weeks ago, when
he had a relapse and steadily grew weaker.
An attack of typhoid fever which occurred in the early part of May was
passed in safety, Mr. Parrott convalescing after five weeks and taking a
trip to Hot Springs, Va., and to his brother in New York. When he returned
in July he seemed to be in better health than usual and took an active part
in his business and other interests. Late in July however, another attack of
sickness showed that his constitution had not recovered from the fever and
on the 29th of August he became so weak that it as considered advisable for
him to enter a sanatarium. He gradually grew worse and never again arose from
his bed.
Samuel F. Parrott was born in Jefferson county, Tenn., on March 6, 1856. He
was the son of Marcus J. Parrott. His mother was formerly Miss Cynthia
Caldwell. He spent his early boyhood and went to school in Knoxville, Tenn.
until the family, at the close of the Civil War, moved to a farm sixteen
miles east of Knoxville. He remained on the farm until March of 1865 when he
came to Atlanta to join his two brothers, George W. and Theodore F. Parrott,
who were engaged in the cotton business under the firm name of Geo. W.
Parrott & Bro.
The diligence from which he applied himself to learning the cotton business
gained for him a wide experience which in 1880 enabled him to obtain a
position with Inman, Swann & Co. of New York, as a buyer of cotton in the
south Atlanta states. From this position he went to Texas in the employ of
Parrott & Robards of San Antonio, the senior member of this firm being a
brother. He returned to Georgia to enter the employ of the Chattahoochee
Brick Co. to take charge of the company's railroad construction and other
work. After superintending the building of the Columbus Southern railroad he
became general manager of the road in May of 1897.
>From then on Mr. Parrott's rise in the railroad world was rapid. He left his
position in Columbus Southern road to become chairman of the Southeastern
Freight Association with headquarters in Atlanta. In May of 1905 he was
elected vice-president and general manager of the Georgia Southern and
Florida, with offices in Macon. After about three years in that service he
returned to Atlanta to accept the presidency of the Atlanta Compress
Company. In the early part of 1909 he was made co-receiver with H.M.
Atkinson of the Atlanta, Birmingham and Atlantic Railroad. He had also been
for several years receiver of the Macon and Birmingham road. The three
positions last mentioned he held up to the time of his death.
Mr. Parrott was one of the founders of teh Piedmont Hotel, the others being
his brother Geo. W. Parrott and Governor-elect Hoke Smith.
He is survived by four brothers, two sisters and a nephew. Geo. W. Parrott
of Atlanta, one of the owners of the Piedmont Hotel is one of the foremost
capitalists of the South. Rev. John W. Parrott is a retired minister living
in Loudon, Tenn. Marcus J. Parrott is a promiment cotton broker and a member
of the New York Cotton Exchange. Alfred C. Parrott is a planter living at
Straw Plains, Tenn. Thomas S. Parrott, a nephew of the deceased, lives at
Newnan, Georgia. The two sisters Misses Kate and Lilly Parrott reside at
Straw Plains, Tenn. The deceased never married.

Brian Walker bwalker41(a)hotmail.com September 16, 2006, 6:46 am
Author: Brian Walker
I first found Isaac Johnson in Darysaw, Jefferson County Arkansas living next
to my direct ancestor John Walker,b. 1820 in Marion County tennessee, little
did I know that this Isaac Johnson and his brother Daniel Johnson Would hold
the keys to me finding and tracing my Walker family back to their roots in
Tennessee.
I found a notation from goodspeeds Biographical sketches about Daniel Johnson
and his second wife Rebecca Glover (nee) Walker this caught my eye and raised
curiosity so I traced the Johnson and Easterly families back to their roots to
the Sequatchie Valley.
Isaac Johnson Jr. was born in Roane county Tennessee Aug. 18, 1821 one of six
sons born to Isaac and Nancy Hunter Johnson. The father being born in 1783 in
North Carolina and the mother in 1784 in Virginia. Isaac Johnson Sr. is said
to have been a farmer, teacher and blacksmith, and is also said to have held
public office in Roane and Marion Counties before he died in 1844 at the age
of sixty years old. The wife and mother lived on at least another ten years
and died sometime after the 1850 census.
The children of Isaac and Nancy Hunter, Johnson are Hiram Hunter Johnson b.
1803 he married an Unknown Jane b. 1805 in TN. Hiram died 1865 in Bledsoe
county, Jane died sometime after the 1880 census they had six children.
Sara Johnson, was born 1811 In Roane County Tn. not much else is known of her.
Malcom Johnson, b. 1812 in Roane county married Unknown Comfort b. 1826 TN.
Malcom died some time after 1890 in Sequatchie county they had two children.
Nancy Johnson was born in 1814 in Roane County she married James Jones b. 1816
in Bledsoe County they left Tennessee and went west in 1849 where they ended
up in Jefferson County Arkansas, With them went some of the Walker Family
including my GGG grandfather John Walker and his brother George Walker b.
1828, Isaac B Easterly and family, the Johnson's mentioned , and the Jones
Family.and others.Nancy died before the 1880 census in Grant County Arkansas
James Jones died Sep 1860 in Saline County Arkansas( old Jefferson County)
they had eight children.
William Johnson born 1816 also ventured to Arkansas and is found in the same
1850 census in Jefferson County Arkansas on the same page as the other
family members. He is not married at this time. It is believed that he
returned to the Sequatchie Valley in the mid 1850's along with some of the
other family members who were disheartend after they made the trip.
Francis Johnson born 1817 not much is known other than he was born in Roane
county and stayed in the Sequatchie valley basin
Rebecca Johnson born 1820 Roane county no information is available at this
time.
Daniel Johnson born 1824 in Roane county, TN married Elizabeth Hixson in 1844
in Marion county, she was born 1827 TN. died 1876 in Grant county Arkansas she
was the daughter on Timothy and Nancy Hixson nothing else in known of the
Hixson family except they lived in the Sequatchie valley and are spoken of in
the Goodspeeds biographical sketch for Daniel Johnson. to their union were
born nine children, they too were apart of the original party that left in
1849 to Arkansas.
Daniel Johnson later married Rachel Glover (nee) Walker in 1878 in Grant
County Arkansas, She was born in 1839 in Tennessee, and if not for Rachel I
would not have known to search for my Walkers in the Sequatchie valley. Daniel
Johnson started out as a farmer and later turned his sights on being a
merchant and this he did and was very successful. He served in the civil war
with honors and lived a very quiet life until he died in 1904 and is burried
in Grant County near the town of Sheridan.
The Johnson, Jones and Easterly families are the reason I was able to track my
family back to Tennessee and it is my hope to help others do the same with
this information given. My search later led me to the early Tennessee census
records where next I found a George Walker living right next door to Isaac
Johnson who is the father to Isaac and Daniel Johnson from Arkansas .I traced
George Walker thru the Census records and up to 1850 where I discovered that
George's wife Annah Was born in Georgia this was some kind of stroke of luck
that later helped me to prove that this was infact my family as well as the
1860 census of Sequatchie County .
My GGG grandfather John Walker all thru the census records listed his father
as being born in Tennessee and his mother in Georgia, little did I know that
on the same page of the 1850 census for Jefferson county Arkansas living right
next door to each other I was looking at other family members, Isaac Johnson
b. 1821 Roane County, TN and his wife Bashaba Walker Johnson b 1825, Bledsoe
County, TN as well as brother Daniel Johnson b.1824 Roane County, TN. George
Walker Jr. b. 1828 Marion County, TN and William Jones b.1826 Bledsoe County,
TN. whos brother James Jones b. 1816 Bledsoe County, TN married Nancy Johnson
b 1814, Roane County, TN. sister to Daniel and Issac Johnson.
It should be noted here that another member who came along with these families
in 1849 to Arkansas was another Johnson brother , William Johnson b 1816 he
is found living in the household of his brother Daniel who married Elizabeth
Hixson b.1827 and daughter of Timothy and Nancy Hixson who also resided in
the Sequatchie Valley.
William Johnson later returned to Tennessee, and to date, I have not tried to
track him any further.
Searching thru the records helped to seal the proof that I needed to tie my
Walker family back to their roots in the Sequatchie valley and that to Captain
George Walker.
some of this proof can be found in the Sequatchie County court minutes that
deal with the death of George Walker b. 1800 and Anna Butler his wife b.1798
in Georgia .
Additional Comments:
The subject matter is proven from various records sources including Census ,
Marriage, state and county court Records where available. My own family history
and a number of books that I own as well as information gleened from
Goodspeeds mention of Daniel Johnson in Grant County Arkansas.
This information is to be used for research only and is not to be used for
resale or other profit making ventures of any kind. I was blessed enough to
have traced my family back to their roots in the great state of Tennessee, and
it is my hope and wish that this will help others to do the same.
I have researched all the names mentioned in this biographical Sketch and have
other information available to assist you free of charge.

John Walker Biography written by ggg Grandson Brian Walker
John Walker came to Jefferson County Arkansas in 1849 with his family from
Marion County,Tennessee, His father being born in Bledsoe County and his
Mother in Georgia, John Walker was born in 1820 in Marion County as well as
his wife Margaret Hix or Hicks. He brought with him his six sons and one
daughter, his sons were George b. 1842, Andrew b. 1844, James b. 1845, Richard
b. 1846, Isaac b. 1847, and Phillip Archibald Walker b. 1849 who is my GG
grandfather and his at the time only daughter Betsy Ann Walker b. 1841.
It was later learned from much research and analysis of the residents of
Jefferson County, Arkansas which later became Grant, that with my Walker
Family came the Johnson, Jones, and Easterly Families, as well as John
Walker's youngest brother George Walker who was born in 1828. George later
retured to the Sequatchie Valley in Tennessee after his sister Basheba Walker
Johnson died . She was b. 1825 in Marion County Tennessee and Married to Isaac
Johnson Jr b. 1821 in Roane County. he was the son of Isaac Johnson Sr. b 1783
and Nancy Hunter b. 1784 of Roane, Bledsoe and Marion Counties and brother of
Daniel Johnson b.1824 who is recorded in the Goodspeeds Biographical sketches
of Grant county Arkansas.
John Walker's Father Was George Walker who was b.03 Jun 1800 in Bledsoe county
Tennessee, and His mother was Annah Ruth Butler who was born 27 Aug 1798 in
Georgia, both of John's Parents died about a year apart in what later was to
become Sequatchie county Tennessee, George was a Justice of the peace and a
baptist minister, Annah was a mid wife. This information can be found on the
1850 census record for Bledsoe county as well as the 1860 census for
Sequatchie county. They are both also recorded in the Sequatchie county court
minutes these records are a welth of information for my Walker family both are
burried at Thans Chapel Cemetery Formally Known As Kell Cemetery Dunlap,
Sequatchie County, Tennessee. John's Brother, Philip Archibald Walker b.1837
who John named my gg grandfather after died 27 Feb 1858 in Sequatchie County,
his death was listed as suiside and can be found in the court minutes of the
same county.
When John Walker's father George Walker died it was John's brother George
Walker Jr. who was put in charge of his fathers estate and the lands were
divided into 8 lots the children of George Walker and Annah Ruth Butler Walker
are listed in the Sequatchie County court minutes as well as other details.
John Walker's grandfather Was Jesse Walker b.28 Dec 1770 in Rowan County North
Carolina, his grandmother was Delila West b.1774 also in North Carolina,
Jesse's father was Captain George Walker b.20 Nov 1745 in Prince William County
(Fauquier) Virginia. Captain George Walker was a revolutionary soldier who
entered the fight for America's freedom from Burke county North Carolina and
served from about 1776 to 1782, he than moved to Knox County Tennessee in 1796
where he resided until about 1807.
When the Indian lands opened up Capt. George Walker moved to Bledsoe County
Tennessee where he died in 1833. He is listed in the history of Tennessee as a
revolutionary war soldier, and the facts of his service are well documented.
Walker family lore has always stated that we have Cherokee blood in us but to
date I find no proof as to any Cherokee connection, only that the Walker
family moved onto Cherokee lands after the removal of the Indians in the
1830's. as long as I can remember I was always told that I was about 1/8
Cherokee no proof just an old family yarn.
Records for the Walker family are skimpy in places due to the cival war but
they are there if you keep digging, one good place to look is in the archives
of the local Baptist churches as they seemed to hold to that faith from early
times.
I don't Know if my ggg grandfather John Walker held to the Baptist faith or
not as I have not found any proof of this to date but do know that his father
George and grandfather Jesse did. Why this is important is when the records of
the county are scarce you may find some listings in the local church records.
John Walker purchased 280 acres of land in 1859 on Land Deed # 9210 listed as
the SW 1/4 of the SW 1/4 of section 8 and the south half of the SE 1/4 of
section 7 and the North half of the NE 1/4 and the SW 1/4 of the NE 1/4 of
section eighteen and the NW 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of section seventeen in township
five south of range 12 west in the district of lands subject to sale at Little
Rrock Arkansas. This land is located near the town of Junet in Grant County,
Here he farmed and raised his family, He out lived 3 wives and fathered (14)
children his last marriage was in 1899 to Susan Brown who was much younger
than he and had 8 children of her own from a previous marriage, All but two
were grown and living on their own at the time of John and Susans marriage.
John Walker's Wife Margaret Hix or Hicks ( note This is not proven to be her
last name due to lack of marriage records in Tennessee because of fire) the
name is taken from James Hicks who is found living with John and Margaret in
the 1850 census for Jefferson county, Darysaw township Arkansas, who is
believed to be her brother. Margaret died in I believe about Aug 1868 while
giving birth to their daughter Laura M Walker. James Hicks later returned to
the Sequatchie Valley in Tennessee with George Walker Jr. who was John's
brother and Isaac Johnson who married Bashaba Walker, Johns sister she died
shortly after giving birth to Charlotta Sally Johnson in 1849 in Grant county
Arkansas.
His second wife was a widow twice before John married her. Her maiden name is
unknown, she was Mrs.Ajesta Norris b. 1822 in Mississippi when she married
James Wardlaw in 1849 in Lauderdale county Tennessee they later moved to
Jefferson county Arkansas about 1856 where her husband James Wardlaw died, and
John Walker married her before the 1870 census in Grant county Arkansas ( part
of old Jefferson county) Ajesta aka Agusten Norris, Wardlaw Walker died before
the 1880 census in Grant county Arkansas
John Walker's third Wife was Mary Harrison McClung wife of David L McClung who
died in about 1864 in the civil war, she was born in 1825 in Alabama and
married John Walker about 1878 in Grant County.( note here !) her daughter
Martha A McClung from her previous marriage to David L McClung, later married
my gg grandfather Philip Archibald Walker. in 1879 I have the marriage
records, some Walker researchers despute this because they find it revolting
but facts are facts and you can't pick your family members, And they were not
blood related ! Mary Harrison McClung died sometime before 1899 in Grant
County Arkansas in the town of Junet.
John Walker's fourth wife was Mrs. Susannah Susan Davis, Anderson, Brown b.
July 1847 in Alabama, She had been widowed twice before she married John
Walker. Her first husband was Doc, Andrew G Anderson b. 1848 in Georgia they
were married in May 1869 in Decalb County Alabama , her second Husband was
William R Brown b. 1847 in Georgia or Alabama, they were married March 1873 in
Jackson County Alabama he died in Grant county Arkansas between 1873 and 1898.
John married Susan Brown in Grant county Arkansas April 16 1899 he died 11
years later.
It should be noted here that the person who Married John Walker and Susan
Brown in 1899 is none other than Moses Easterly son of Isaac B Easterly who
was part of my early original research and a large help in finding my Walker
family in Tennessee. Isaac B Easterly came to Jefferson County Arkansas with
John Walker in 1849 he is mentioned in the Sequatchie county court minutes,
and is listed as being decd, in Arkansas. The Easterly family were very close
to my Walker line in Arkansas as well as the Johnson and Jones Families who
also come from the Bledsoe , Roane, Rhea, Marion and Sequatchie Valley in
Tennessee
John Walker died March 10, 1910 at the age of 89 and lived in the same home
until his death while on a visit to his grandson George W Walker b. 1871 son
of Isaac Walker .
John Walker the adventurer, pioneer, and farmer, saw the formation of the
Sequatchie Valley in Tennessee from former Indian lands, the formation of
Grant County from Jefferson and other Counties in Arkansas, lost sons in the
Civil war, burried three wives, lived to the ripe old age of 89 and was fondly
known by the people of the area as uncle Johnnie. His was just one of the many
faces that made up these early pioneers and adventurers from Tennessee that
came to be the people of Jefferson and early Grant County Arkansas.
Like many other counties The Grant county court records were all destroyed by
fire and their holdings only cover 1878 and up, Some early records can be
found in Jefferson county as Jefferson is the parent county to Grant formed
abt 1868 ==============================================================
