Irene G. Hill
Irene Gertrude Arnett Hill, 80, of Elizabethton, went to be with the Lord
on Monday, November 28, 2005, in the Intensive Care Unit at Sycamore Shoal
Hospital.
Mrs. Hill was a native of Roan Mountain and had lived most of her life in
Elizabethton. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Daley Stevens Arnett.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy
Marie Hartley, a sister, Christine Arnett, and a brother, Junior Arnett.
Mrs. Hill was retired from North American Rayon Corporation and was a
member of Pleasant Beach Baptist Church. She also worked at several restaurants
in the area.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Mary Hill,
Unicoi, Vincent and Carolyn Hill, Surgoinsville, and Wade and Linda Gail Hill,
Elizabethton; a daughter and son-in-law, Debra J. and Robert Sams,
Elizabethton; four granddaughters, Susan Chambers and Stacie Looney, both of
Surgoinsville, Kimberly Gardner and Dana Miller, both of Granite Falls, N.C.;
five grandsons, Eric Sams, Scott Hill, Jeremy Hill and Joseph Hill, all of
Elizabethton, and Brandon Hill of New York; 10 great-grandchildren; three
brothers, Marcus Arnett and Leon Arnett, both of Michigan, and John Arnett of
North Carolina; and four sisters, Zedia Ellis and Martha Cress, both of
Elizabethton, Helen Riddle of Georgia, and Mary Carter of Massachusetts.
Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Mrs. Hill will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday,
November 30, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Bobby Stout and Mr. Kirk
Langston officiating. Music will be under the direction of Scott Reynolds.
Graveside services and interment will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 1, at
Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-
in-law, Eric Sams, Scott Hill, Jeremy Hill, Joseph Hill, Tom Looney and John
Gardner. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. David Hecht, Dr. James Shipley and
all of the fine nursing staff of the Intensive Care Unit of Sycamore Shoals
Hospital. A very special "Thank You" goes out to Dr. David Hecht for the loving
care he gave mother during her stay in the hospital. The family will receive
friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the service
hour. Pallbearers, family and friends are requested to assemble at the funeral
chapel at 10:30 a.m. Thursday to go to the cemetery. Online condolences to the

Myrtle L. Winters
Myrtle Lee Jones Winters, 87, 1001 Nave Street, Elizabethton, died
Wednesday, November 30, 2005, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.
Mrs. Winters was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late
Walter Lee and Mamie Oaks Jones. In addition to her parents, she was preceded
in death by her husband, Horton Winters, in 1997, a son, Wayne Winters, a
brother, Milburn Jones, and two infant brothers.
Mrs. Winters was a member of the Carter County Crewettes for 35 years. She
was a member of Sims Hill Christian Church and a retired employee of North
American Rayon Corporation.
Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Dula and Dale Hensley and
Evelyn Whitehead Johnson, all of Elizabethton; and two sons and three daughters-
in-law, Roger and Loretta Winters and Mildred Winters, all of Elizabethton, and
David and Lois Winters, Westlake, Ohio. Thirteen grandchildren, several great-
grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also
survive.
Funeral services for Mrs. Winters will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday,
December 2, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Kirk Langston officiating.
Music will be provided by Dean Palmer, soloist, and Scott Reynolds, organist.
Graveside services and interment will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 3, at
Happy Valley Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Ralph Barnett and grandsons.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday,
prior to the service hour. Friends may also call at the residence of her

Dorothy D. Hazelwood
Dorothy Dimple Hazelwood, 70, 134 Oscar Johnson Road, Hampton, died
Wednesday, November 30, 2005, at her residence.
Ms. Hazelwood was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late
Edward F. and Nell Smith Hazelwood. In addition to her parents, she was
preceded in death by a sister, Fern Simerly, and a son, Malcolm Hazelwood.
Ms. Hazelwood was a retired employee of Sycamore Shoals Hospital. She was a
member of Union Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Marion R. Hazelwood and McKinley R. Hazelwood
and his fiancée, Michelle Grindstaff, and her daughter, Emma Grindstaff,
Hampton; three grandchildren, Andrew, Sean and Travis Hazelwood; a great-
grandson, Travis Hazelwood; three sisters and three brothers-in-law, Betty and
Carl Estep, Hampton, Cordia Berry, David and Polly Grindstaff and Robert
Simerly, all of Elizabethton; a brother, Carl Hazelwood, Hampton; several
nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Geraldine Banner.
Funeral services for Ms. Hazelwood will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday,
December 2, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Rev. Haskel Ingram officiating.
Music will be provided by Ann Stepp. Graveside services and interment will be
at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 3, at Morton Cave Hill Cemetery in Hampton.

Delia Potter
Delia Potter, 88, of Roan Mountain, passed away Wednesday, November 30,
2005, at Johnson City Medical Center following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Potter was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Hamp
and Ardie Heaton Brewer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death
by her husband, Murphy Potter, three grandchildren, five brothers and five
sisters.
Mrs. Potter was of the Baptist faith and was a homemaker.
Survivors include three sons, Oliver, Henry and Ronald Potter, all of Roan
Mountain; five daughters, Kathy Hamby, Mary Odom, Ruby Matheson and Wilma
Chappell, all of Roan Mountain, and Joyce Odom, Butler; one brother, Lester
Brewer, Elizabethton; one sister, Ailene Webb, Johnson City; 17 grandchildren;
20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Several nieces and
nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Mrs. Potter will be held at 8 p.m. Friday, December 2,
in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain, with Rev.
Jim Storie officiating. Music will be under the direction of Charlotte Smith.
Graveside services and interment will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 3,
at Markland Hill Cemetery in the Buck Mountain community. Family and friends
are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Saturday to travel together in
procession to the cemetery. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. -- Mrs. Adelaide Reed Merritt, beloved wife of the late
Samuel Blaine Merritt, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, November 28,
2005, at her residence.
Mrs. Merritt was a native of Elizabethton, Tenn. She was a charter member
of Fleming Christian Church and attended Christ's Way Christian Church in Aiken
with her son following her husband's death. She truly loved her church and
church family.
Mrs. Merritt worked for United Way as an Administrative Assistant for 15
years and was a Field Representative for the American Heart Association until
her retirement. She believed Jesus Christ was her Savior and served the Lord
everyday of her life.
Survivors include her son, Alan Reed Merritt and his wife Sharon Boyce
Merritt of North Augusta; a daughter, Elaine Merritt of Martinez; a brother,
Dorsey Reed and his wife Barbara of Johnson City, Tenn; three grandchildren,
Kellie Merritt and her fiancé Patrick Gleason, Dina Holcombe and her husband
George, and Chris Thompson and his wife Elisha; eight great-grandchildren; a
special niece, Whitney Johns Martin and her husband Charles; and a special
nephew, Jeffery Johns and his wife Arlene. She was preceded in death by her
husband of 58 years and her beloved sister, Charlotte Johns.
Funeral services for Mrs. Merritt will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December
2, at Crawford Avenue Chapel with Pastor Michael Terry and Rev. George Holcombe
Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park. Pallbearers
will be Patrick Gleason, Ryan Terry, Billy Parham, Richard Wead, Chris Thompson
and Sam Franklin. The family received friends at the funeral home on Thursday,
Dec. 1, from 6 until 8 p.m. If so desired, memorials may be made to Christ's
Way Christian Church Building Fund, 183 Old Wagner Road, Aiken, SC 29801 or
Fleming Christian Church Meals on Wheels, 2526 Lumpkin Road, Augusta, GA 30906.

Dan Crowe
Dan Crowe, retired teacher and former Dobyns-Bennett track and cross-
country coach, died Thursday, December 1, 2005, at the age of 75 in the Holston
Valley Medical Center.
An educator for 34 years, Crowe began his teaching career at the one-room
Fairview School in Carter County. The majority of his years as an educator were
spent at Dobyns-Bennett High School in the Social Studies Department where he
introduced the study of local history into the curriculum. His innovative
teaching techniques garnered him the 1985 East Tennessee Teacher of the Year
Award and the Excellence in Teaching Award given by NBC and the Carnegie
Foundation in 1989.
Crowe began coaching at Hampton High School in Carter County where he
organized the school's first track team. Coach Crowe's lengthy and award
winning career as track and cross-country coach at Dobyns-Bennett High school
included three state championships. He was thrice honored as East Tennessee
Track Coach of the Year. In 2004, he was inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame.
Crowe was also a noted local author and historian. His roots in the
Horseshoe Community of Carter County provided the backdrop for many of his
writings and the source for the rich collection of oral histories he gathered
from its residents. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, his love of country
was also reflected in his poetry.
Crowe was a member and deacon of Siam Baptist Church in Elizabethton where
he shared his gift for teaching by serving as a Sunday school teacher. A man of
strong faith, he lived a life of quiet example.
Dan was predeceased by his mother, Fannie Crowe. He is survived by his wife
of 49 years, Wilma Lewis Crowe, of the home; by his daughter and son-in-law,
Dr. Gary and Judy Reedy (Clarks Summit, Pa.), and by his granddaughter, Bailey
Reedy (Crystal Lake, Pa). He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Geraldine
Lewis Pierce and her husband Paul and their daughter Jennifer, all of
Elizabethton.
The family wishes to thank the numerous physicians and other health care
professionals who attended to him during his years of declining health.
A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday,
December 3, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home with Rev. Jack
Roddy and Rev. Earl Golden officiating. Calling hours are from noon until 2
p.m. in the chapel prior to the service. Immediately following the funeral,
graveside services with military honors will be conducted at Wilson Cemetery.
The Captain Lynn H. Folsom VFW Post No. 2166 will provide military honors.
Music will be provided by bagpiper Howard Ensor. Active pallbearers will be
members of the Upper Room Sunday School Class of Siam Baptist Church, Ray
Garrison, Paul Pless, Doug Bailey and Andy Hood. Honorary bearers will be Phil
Ellis, Howard Matherly, Charles "Dude" LaPorte, Willie Church, Tom Coughenour,
Ernie Dickson, Dr. Tom Rogers, Joe Reedy, Vaughn Randolf, Elmer Carden, Eddie
Hardin, Hunter Estep, Roy Huskins, Bob May, F.M. Hill, Carroll Montgomery,
Charles Lipford, deacons and friends of Siam Baptist Church, Companies E and F
1950 National Guard, Elizabethton High School Class of 1950, Upper East
Tennessee Track Coaches' Association 1961-1979, teachers and staff of Dobyns-
Bennett High School 1967-1989, members of the 1958-1963 Hampton High School,
1963-1967 East Forsyth and 1967-1979 Dobyns-Bennett High School track and cross-
country teams. The family requests that those desiring to make memorial
