I'm a beginner at Swedish genealogy. The story in our family is that my
great-grandmother and her husband changed their name when they landed from Sweden. They
changed it from Augustin to Erickson so that the family couldn't trace them and that
they wouldn't sound too Swedish.
My questions are:
1. Is Augustin a common Swedish name?
2. My great-grandparents, Christine Erickson and her husband, probably emigrated from
Sweden between 1870 and 1888. I don't know her maiden name or her husband name. They
had a daughter, Anna Sophia Erickson, born in Sweden, and another, Ellen Christine
Erickson, born in the Dakota Territory in 1888. They were in Spokane, Washington, by
1891. Anna Sophia married John Julius Holmgren, also born in Sweden, in Spokane in 1891.
Can you recommend a way to find when and how they came over, and hopefully where they came
I don't know any locations or related names in Sweden.
Hopefully, Arthur Chadbourne
