Västergötland is a Swedish landskap = province. Look at this province map of Sweden.
Västra Götaland is the modern name for three historical län: Älvsborg, Skaraborg, and
Göteborg och Bohus. This site has both an historical map of Swedish län (counties) and a
modern map of Swedish län.
Sätila parish was in the former Älvsborg län and since your ancestors lived there at the
time it was still Älvsborg län, I think the location should be listed that way in your
records, with perhaps a note saying that the län is now Västra Götaland. (Some records are
kept in the län and you would find the historical län and not the modern län in the Family
History Library Catalog.) No records were kept in the province, as far as I know. Sätila
parish was in Västergötland province, however.
Västergötland (the province) is NOT equivalent to Västra Götaland (the modern name of the
Swedes tend to use the letter codes for the län instead of writing the län. Those letter
codes are at the bottom of the län map page.
