Hi Folks, a question came up on the Sweden list and it got me to
wondering. The question revolves around Swedish records that usually say
a family immigrated into the United States via New York, maybe the
destination was Minnesota, but eventually the family wound up in
So, how did the family get to California?
The answer is pretty obviously the railroad. I know my husband's
grandparents came (from England and from Sweden) via New York, and I
think most immigrants came that way. I just got to wondering--is that
because all immigrants had to come through Ellis Island? Or were there
similar clearing houses for immigrants on the West Coast?
I would like to refer any answers from Norcal to the Sweden list.
