Elna Sue Johanson, a family friend and long-time Swedish genealogical
researcher now concentrating on locating American Swedish family
descendants for people in Sweden, was kind enough to send me a big
package of information on Swedish genealogical research.
Among its contents was a very informative handout from the Swenson
Swedish Immigration Research Center. I trust the Center will not mind if
I reproduce part of it here:
Swedish-American church records are the most frequently used sources of
informtion for family history research. We have micorfilm records of the
Swedish -American congregations from the following denominations:
Augustana Lutheran, Mission Covenant, Evangelical Free, Swedish
Methodist, adn the Swedish Baptist. It is important to reaize that the
quality of the individual church records varies. If the church books
were complete and accurately kept, the following information can be
gained about members:
date and place of birth and baptism
date of confirmation
date received as a church member
year of arrival in America
previous and subsequent residences in U.S.
dimilar data for spouse and children.
To begin a search in the abovementioned records, you must know where the
immigrants settled in Nort America. In the case of a city with a large
Swedish population, such as Chicago or Minneapolis, the name of a
specific church, a street address, or even neighborhood of residence is
essential for search purposes.
Talk to older relatrives; ask them where the immigrants' children were
baptized and confirmed (denominations and location of church)
If possible, obtain copies of marriage licenses, death certificates,
census records, and listings in city directories. A pastor's name on an
official church document is also helpful. These documents can provide
you with your ancestors' addresses which can help you determine which
church they might have belonged to.
