Nyköping is the name of a parish and a township in Södermanlands län
(county), Sweden. It seems likely you can find your father's birth record
and a record of his family in the parish books for Nyköping Parish. The
books are available on microfilm at the Family History Centers (FHC)
attached to many Churches of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The books
include birth (födde), marriage, and death records and "family survey"
(husförhörslängd) records. The latter show family groups, which village or
farm they live on, the birthdate and birthplace of each family member, and
when persons move into or out of the parish. The volunteers at the FHC will
help you find and order the correct film, which will be made available for
your use for a few weeks for a nominal rental fee.
You might try asking (on this List) for a lookup on the Emigrant CD. The
name Knute Anderson, the emigration date of 1910-1912, and the fact that he
was from Nyköping, might be enough to find him on the CD. If found, his
emigration record will contain a "källkod number", with which the Swedish
archives (Landsarkivet Göteborg, for example) can tell you the name of the
ship on which he left Sweden. Most often, emigrants boarded a ship to
England or some other European location, then took a larger transatlantic
ship from there.
Finding the ship on which Knute arrived in America will be harder, and will
involve searching the passenger lists for all ships arriving in Boston (or
New York, or wherever he entered the U.S.) for the date he arrived. If you
have his Declaration of Intent to become a U.S. citizen, it might tell the
date and port of his arrival. Without that information, the hunt will be
long. Passenger lists are available on microfilm at the National Archives,
and I believe also at the FHC's, and a growing number are on-line at the
Immigrant Ships Transcibers Guild, http://istg.rootsweb.com/
. Many have
been published in a set of books by Filby, which are available in larger
libraries and are indexed.
Good luck, Gene in Seattle

Subject: [Sweden] Knute Werner Anderson
I am looking for information on my father, Knute Anderson, who was
Nykoping, Sweden on Aug. 25, 1886. He left Sweden about 1910-1912 and
settled in Lynn, MA until his death in March 1946. I would like information
on his parents and siblings - dates of birth, death, and name of ship he
came over on. Is Nykoping the name of the town or parish? I would
appreciate any information you can give me. Thanks for your help.
