My cousin & I are banging out heads against a wall trying to locate
information on our grandfathers and their sister. They lived in Kristianstad
or Osby and came to the states near the turn of the century by way of
Stockholm and settled in Illinois.
Their names are: Martin Hultquest de La Gardie, Oscar Augustus
H'gernizofsquaqua de La Gardie and Theodora Matilde de La Gardie.
Oscar was born here in the states in Vermont while his parents were on a
diplomatic mission and is the oldest, born 6-10-1864, Martin was born
1-01-1868 and Theodora was born 8-23-1871. Their parents were Johann and
Ingeborg. Their father remarried after their mother passed away and the
siblings could not get along with their new stepmother. This is why they
came to immigrate to the states. Both brothers were extremely proud of being
de La Gardie's. Our problem is we cannot get past this information.
We have been told that it was very common for people to change their names or
to adopt the name of the estate they lived and worked on. If the siblings
were "natural" children or assumed the name, why would Oscar have been born
here in the U.S. while his parents were on a diplomatic mission. This
information, by the way, was given by Oscar directly to his grandson, so
it's not an assumption. You see the mysteries we are encountering.
I have scanned many, many ships registers looking for three (siblings) with
the same names in their twenties and have come up with nothing. I also do
not know what parish they were born in.
We would appreciate any assistance.
Sandra De La Gardie
