Can you expound on that about the image quality of ArchivDigital
Instead of scans from old microfiche AD's images are color digital
photos which were taken fairly recently. In general I find I like the
look and readability of them better. I just don't like that the image
you get when saving is what amounts to a screen grab sans all the
surrounding junk you'd have to crop out of a true screen grab. It's
true that using virtual desktop software such as GiMeSpace to fool
your computer into believing your desktop is larger than it is works
to get a higher rez image, but so far I haven't wanted to spend the
$$$ on GiMeSpace I've only used the trial.
I found Ancestry's records to be relatively trouble-free in
finding, and saving.
Me too. I have no huge problem with the Ancestry/Genline images and
as I've said like that Ancestry gives me a nice decent resolution
image of the whole page when I save one.
It's been a while with Genline, but the images I have saved from
are poor in comparison to the Ancestry ones. IIRC, those are images
created by doing screen captures. Naturally, I want the best quality of
record I can get. He whole point of paying for access to records is to
keep a copy to support my claims.
The Genline & Ancestry images are the same it's just that the method
of saving images from Genline aren't as nice (or weren't last I used
it, they're similar to the method on AD).
I've never tried ArchivDigital, and it's about that time of
they'll probably have a free trail or a deal. I probably only need about 6
months or so to get what I can. At least until I can break trough the
There are a couple ways you can try it before commiting lots of cash.
You can use their software logging in as username demo/password demo
and only have access to Älvsbacka parish records (but it give you an
idea of how things work/look) or you can get a brief 1 week membership
for $11-$12ish US to really give it a try. I first did the demo for
about 15 min and then signed up for a week. I've had an easier time
reading some images on AD than on Ancestry/Genline. My week is up
after today and I'm not sure if I'll do a long term sign up or not.
If I didn't also have Ancestry I probably would, but as it stands I'll
probably wait a bit.
