Dawson - Major Edward Steer Kennet - 106th Light Infantry - died
Grave at Simla - "Sacred to the memory of Major E.S. Kennet Dawson late of
the 106th Light Infantry who died at Simla 10th of September 1868. This
is erected by his brother officers as a mark of the respect and
entertained by them for the deceased."
John, This came out and hit me with a sledge-hammer!
Don't know if you remember I have traced my GGG grandfather as
John Steer, married Phillis Humphries May 4th 1842
His father was given as George Dawson, and the trail stopped dead.
Now another person with Dawson and Steer in their names-
Major Edward STEER Kennet DAWSON
We need to understand the IGI marriage, John STEER to Phillis HUMPHREY, 9
May 1842, Westerham, Kent, the fathers are George DAWSON and Michael
HUMPHREY respectively. Some reasonable explanation is needed for John and
his father's surnames being different, if it isn't a simple a transcription
error. The Society of Genealogists doesn't list Westerham parish marriages
for 1842 in their on-line index but that is incomplete. An explanation
maybe this IGI baptism -
John Steer, mother Mary Ann STEER, 31 July 1814, Crowhurst, Surrey, Batch
The parish register should give more information if copies can be found,
possibly 'illegitimate or 'base born'. Mary Ann could have been widowed,
which is the type of detail that isn't held in the IGI. If John is
illegitimate and the IGI has correct details of the 1842 marriage then it
appears he knew the name of his father, though he could have made this up,
moreover, if George Dawson didn't voluntarily pay maintenance for the child
then the poor laws would be used to extract it. This is still all
speculation and needs to be verified by tracking down register copies and
seeing whether any poor law records have survived.
Dawson was a reasonably common name so stronger evidence will be needed to
connect them. I realise that Jack had posted a snippet last March about
Edward Steer Kennet DAWSON.
