Subject: [STEER] My Brighton Steer family
Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2007 17:47:30 +0100
Further to my previous posts I have now obtained three birth certificates
for my STEER family, two being in Brighton giving new
I am hoping someone may have a Sussex Directory of either around 1862, or
later than 1867 but before 1871.
My STEER family have never been found in the 1871 or 1881 census, although I
am certain there were in Brighton. Many others have
looked for me without success. A paid enquiry at ESRO was absolutely no
good. (I do have a possible for son William in 1881, but
need the parents).
It is my conclusion that the family are living under another surname, and
probably under different first names.
In 1861 the family are living in St Leonard's, Sussex, father William STEER,
40, Cab Proprietor, Baldock, Herts (not believed
correct), Anne STEER, 29, Baldock, Herts, Elenor STEER, 3, Baldock, Herts,
and William STEER, 1, Hastings, Sussex.
On 30 July 1862 at 48 York Street, Brighton, Kate STEER is born to William
STEER, Fly Proprietor, and mother Ann (nee WYLIE). (GRO
Certificate). Kate is not baptised until 25 August 1875 at St Peter's
On 24 October 1867 at 20 Whichelo Place, Brighton, Elizabeth STEER is born
to William STEER, Fly Driver, and mother Ann (nee WYLIE).
(GRO Certificate). She is also baptised in 1875 with her sister.
After much searching in the 1871 I find that 20 Whichelo Place is
I have the 1867 Post Office Directory for Sussex on CD. Whichelo Place is
not listed in the Court Directory, and there is no William
STEER who is a Fly Proprietor/Job Master. (Please note that the William
STEERS shown is a proven different person). There are no Fly
Proprietors or drivers shown at Whichelo Place.
When William STEER married in 1856 in Baldock, he was a licensed victualler
from Brighthelmstone, for daughter Elinors birth in 1857
Baldock he was an Inn Keeper. Thereafter he varies between Cab/Fly
Proprietor and Fly Driver. He is also described as such when his
son marries at St Michael, Brighton in 1885.
The only other clues I have are from the BVRI v2: showing an Emma STEER born
12 October 1865 baptised 23 December 1874 at St Peters
to William & Ann (n/t GRO), Ernest STEER baptised 25 August 1875 St Peters
to William & Ann (n/t GRO), and Emma STEER again baptised
25 August 1875 St Peters to William & Ann (n/t GRO).
Ann's sister Emma WYLIE is in Brighton for both the 1861 & 1871 but shown in
service, and marries on 25 December 1873 at the London
Road Chapel, Ann Street, Brighton (Countess of Huntingdon Connexion - no
records at ESRO).
The family reappear in 1891 in London, Ann (Annie) 59, is a widow living on
her own means, Elinor 31, a Milliner, Ernest 16, errand
boy born Brighton. By 1901 Ann is alone with Elinor still in London.
As William is my Great Great Grandfather I have a much stronger interest in
trying to find him. His marriage certificate says he is
the son of William STEER, painter & Glazier, a proverbial needle in a
haystack, and I have looked in the 1841 & 1851, but without a
confirmed birthplace it is hopeless.
Thanks to all those who read this far. Apologies to SFHG members as also
posted on that list as well.
