Stephen, That was my first thought, but as William was down as owner occupier, living in
Crowhurst rather than Tandridge, I thought it might not be him. The transfer of ownership
was a year or two out, and I wasn't thinking clearly about the title of the records as
land tax, never having used them before, I was more thinking about actual property/bricks
This is certainly implied by ancestry, but is obviously (in hindsight) incorrect.
''This collection contains land tax books from Surrey, England. Records
list all households in the area, who occupied the house, who owned the
house, the name or situation or the property, and how much tax was
From another site -
''What was taxed? - Land, tithes,
some buildings, some salaries, pensions and investments.''
I have now finished looking at Crowhurst. Still only the 2 properties of interest.
Benjamin Hall 1780 - 1792
Mrs Hall 1793
(1794 - no record)
John Steer 1795 - 1806
Ann Steer 1807 - 1823
Benjamin Steer 1824 - 1826 (described as a farm in 1826)
(1827 - Thos Budd Esq took over)
By 1826 Benjamin paid £5 3s 0d
Owner occupier of land/property
William Steer 1780 - 1797
James Steer 1798 - 1832 (described as farm or land from 1826)
By 1826 James paid £4 3s 0d in land tax

This must be William STEER born 1736 Reigate who married Mary ATHERFOLD in
William's Will of 1794 left his farms in Crowhurst & Lingfield to his son
James, he had a lot of land. William died in 1795 in Tandridge.
James was born 1773 Tandridge and died 1837 Crowhurst. I have him married to
a Mary from his Will of 1837 but as yet have not found the marriage. I
assume it was late in life as no children are mentioned.

rental given as ?35 - ?40

(died 1806) and Ann>Steer, her daughter.

taken over by James Steer owner occupier in>1798 - 1811 (and further) They
paid tax initially of ?0 4s>0d, lowered in 1788 to ?0 3s 0d (rent ?1),
rising to ?2 13s>0d (rent ?22) in 1810.
>So far I cannot place this William Steer, possibly died c>1798, possibly
had a son James Steer, lived in Crowhurst.?
