Still looking, found nothing else.
John Hoadley bapt 28 May 1815 to Ann Hoadley, father not given, as you have said.
Looking at other people's trees at Ancestry for pointers, most of them seem to have
John Hoadley baptised 28 May 1815, Limpsfield, parents William Hoadley and Ann Virgo.
Since William and Ann married in 1840, I think this is highly unlikely.
Reminds me of something similar with one of my ancestors. Charles Pinnocks' father
died when he was young, his mother remarried. He was brought up as Charles Haines from age
He married my great grandmother Gertrude Lily Barker in 1887 as Charles Haines and they
had several children.
However in Jan 1897 they went through a second marriage as 'Charles Pinnocks and
Gertrude Lily Haines, formerly Barker. Previously married in 1887'
A child born 17 Jul 1897 was named as Herbert Haines Pinnocks. This reversal was short
lived. By 1891 census they were all Haines again, and the son was referred to as Herbert
Haines Haines throughout his life.
My father only knew the family as Haines.
Pure guesswork, but perhaps John Hoadley's father was Steer, perhaps he found out in
later life and reverted to Steer for a while, then reverted back to Hoadley.
But genealogy isn't supposed to be about guesswork, there may be another

Not sure if relevant but there is this in 1841 Census

Doesn't help with is John a STEER or HOADLEY though.

I had found a John STEER in the 1851 Census at Rye, Sussex. Age 34, a
Carpenter born Limpsfield, Surrey, with wife Mary A, Age 27, born
Looking through the original images of St Peter Limpsfield on Ancestry I
found they have a Burial Accounts book 1839-1882 that is not indexed. I
found this as it appears that the Limpsfield Burials Register 1813-1855 has
not been indexed either so I accessed the registers through the Browse this
collection box where St Peter appears.
I have a John STEER c1816 Limpsfield (no STEER baptism found). On 27 May
1838 a Clare Matilda HOADLEY is baptised Limpsfield (born 1 May) to John &
Mary Ann HOADLEY, Limpsfield, Butcher. She appears as STEER in the 1851 &
1861. There is no trace in GRO Births.
Then a John STEER is privately baptised Limpsfield 21 Dec 1843 to John &
Mary Anne STEER, Limpsfield, Grocer. In the Govt online GRO Births there are
two John STEER's born 4Q 1843 Godstone. One is the son of Edward & Caroline
ref 4 148 (mother's maiden name GLOVER) who was alive in the 1851. The other
ref 4 147 has the mother's maiden name as HARRIS. The burial register has a
John STEER buried 2 Jan 1844, Infant. The Burial Accounts Book for the same
date has John HOADLEY alias STEER age 4 weeks.
Mary Ann the mother appears as STEER in the Burial Register on 14 Dec 1843
age 29, but as HOADLEY alias STEER in the Burial Accounts Book.
John STEER (or HOADLEY) remarries in 1845 (registry office I think) to Mary
Ann CORKE of Edenbridge with whom he appears in later censuses.
Now is this John STEER a STEER or a HOADLEY? I cannot find a STEER baptism
to match but there is a Limpsfield baptism of John HOADLEY 28 May 1815 (born
27 Apr) to Ann HOADLEY, Limpsfield, but no mention of a father, and no
apparent burial. I cannot find the earlier John HOADLEY or STEER marriage to
a Mary Ann (HARRIS or otherwise).
Any assistance would be appreciated.
