The Edward STEER that John HOWARD visited in Chatham, Kent, Canada was tentatively
identified as son of John STEER and Ann STEER, though there was no proof, nor perhaps
likely to be so - Edward STEER last heard of in 1827, he was left a bequest in his
Twylla-Dawn STEER, Stephen STEERE and Lionel COLES have come up with near-as proof that
it was one and the same.
As noted below, Stephen mentions death of 5 children from diphtheria, Edward STEER
Stephen contacted Lionel COLE, well known Kent researcher -
'' "Edward Steer was a farmer in the period 1827-33. His farm was possibly
Polands which is near Broxham Pound and was mostly in Chiddingstone detached, with the
farm house in Edenbridge and a
few fields in Hever. In my Hever index 1820-51 (the only one written so far) I have three
statements: He paid rates for Hever North in 1824 and 1827. He paid Land Tax £1-16s as
tenant of James Kidder for Polelands in 1827 and 1829 (Kings Borough). He was bridgewarden
of Kings Borough in 1827. Kings Borough was
a division of Somerden hundred and extended over northeastern Edenbridge, northern Hever
and (originally) northwestern Chiddingstone. If Edward moved to Brasted it could have been
to Brasted detached which today is part of Hever.I haven't made a full study of this
an unfortunately he left for Canada before the Tithe Award Survey was made."
He makes the assumption of emigration from the details I have told him, but what is clear
is that Edward left the area.''
Then the 'proof' that this family is connected to John and Ann STEER.
From Twylla-Dawn STEER
''Stephen,your post to the steer
list re: the 5 tragic deaths may be the piece ofthe puzzle I could not find, referenced in
a letter from my grandaunt,Florence Mary STEER Crain (FLORY) to my grandfather Harry
William Vernon Steer (HWVS) in 1920. Her inquiry to HWVS included a reference to a trip
made by HWVS and his uncle, (John Thomas Steer) to visit some Steer relatives whose 5
children recently had been lost to the "black diptheria" (FLORY's spelling).
Because no time frame was included in FLORY's letter, there was no way to search for
the information, since she thought the visit was to New York. The number of children with
the Steer surname is too coincidental to ignore.''
From Aunt Flory -
''Mother says that you and your Uncle John went to see some relatives in New York,
and that five of their children had just died of black diptheria, at that time.
Do you remember who they were and what relation they were of your Uncle John?''
So, not just 1 more (Jane), but 2 more (Jane and Edward) of John and Ann STEER's
children followed for further generations, thanks initially to Brian ANDERSON. In fact,
that is all the children of John and Ann accounted for now, missing death years for some
of them, but descendants traced for all of them, bar Israel STEER, who died as a baby in
Not really much help to Stephen, until/unless he connects to this family, but help to me

Wm H STEERS, male, age 12, born Ont, Baptist, Origin Eng.
Robert S STEERS, male, age 10, born Ont, Baptist, Origin Eng.
The Edward STEER senior to me is likely to be Edward s/o John STEER who
married Ann STEER, baptised 18 or 28 October 1796. He is a beneficiary of
his mothers will in 1827 but nothing else is known about him.
This fits what John HOWARD recorded, as Edward's brother William STEER is in
Canterbury, Kent between 1841-1870 when he died. Sister Jane born 1804
Crowhurst I assume to be the Jane Adelaide who married Joseph HOWARD, and
brother Robert lived in Bexley, then Wilmington died 1869. Brother John
lived in Sevenoaks and emigrated to Australia in 1870. Of the other siblings
Benjamin died in 1864, Mary Ann married James WOOD died 1859, Thomas married
a Mary from East Grinstead but died before 1841. George lived in St Pancras
London and died 1870. Lastly Israel who died soon after birth in 1807.
This just leaves proving that Edward STEER senior was the Edward who married
Ann, then Sarah, and had another son named Edward born 1833 after the first
Edward died, and probably the cause of Ann's death. Unfortunately my source
does not give burial dates in Edenbridge in 1833 to indicate my theory is
I cannot find Edward in the 1841 Census, so assume he emigrated to Canada
between 1835 and 1841?
