Stephen, and anyone else who may be interested.
Here is a family group sheet my correspondent has sent me, none of which has been verified
by me. Apologies - as you said, Stephen, it was the children who emigrated, and not
Joseph HOWARD himself, who died in 1868 (?? Joseph Howard, age 60, Billericay Sep qtr
1868, Vol 4a p111).
John and William HOWARD emigrated first, and returned to visit relatives in Kent and
elsewhere in 1867. John very fortunately kept a Day Book, where he lists where he went,
who he saw, and how much he paid for things. Brian has sent me scanned copies of pages of
his trip to England, and they make for very interesting reading.
He has told me that 'the tradition in the Howard family was that the step mom was
cruel and John and William took off to join the Navy but Joseph stopped them, then upon a
return to Britain from Canada they rescued the girls… some of the legend may be true but
some is not'.
When John and William got to Canada they apparently stayed with other STEER relatives, but
I haven't come across any branches of this family in Canada - any takers?
'John in the biographical record of 1904 states: “From there he went to the vicinity
of Kent Bridge in
Chatham township, and remained there for five years with a cousin, Edward Steer.” Also
“Four years were then spent with another cousin, George Steer…”'
With the various STEER family members that he visited, and mentioning one as Uncle W STEER
at Canterbury (Twylla-Dawn STEER's ancestor), Brian feels that this is the right
connection, with Jane STEER, daughter of John STEER and Ann STEER. I tend to agree with
him, the evidence is good, but there is as yet no proof positive. The icing on the cake
would be the marriage details, which I have been unable to find anywhere.

Subject: [STEER] Jane STEER 1804, Crowhurst, Surrey
While I cannot find the marriage I have found the family on the 1841, 1851 &
1861. I would expect they married in London or Kent, as not in the Surrey or
Sussex marriage indexes. Joseph did remarry but did not appear to emigrate,
it would seem only John did.

Westham, Kent. Rebecca, Wife, Marr, 48, Uxbridge, Middx. Ann, D, 13,

Near by on RG 9, Piece 189, F84, 47 Percival St, Clerkenwell. Ann E Howard,
Serv,Un, 18, House Serv, Herne Bay, Kent, (with Moore family).
In the Canada Ontario 1861 there are two possible John HOWARD's both born
England about the right age. Neither with a family and both Labs.
I have sent Margaret off list the children of John & Ann, etc.
At present this family is not related to me, though a connection may be
likely further back in time. Come on you Kent & Surrey Steer's have a DNA
