Now seems clear that the John STEER, a native of Dartmouth, who lost his
life by falling under the ice in this harbour 25.2.1825 age 41 years was not
related to the John STEER who became a pillar of St John's Methodist
This shop keeper born in Tormoham (now Torquay), baptised in the parish
church of St Saviours on 23.9.1827 (born 9.10.1824)
His brother Thomas was baptised the same day, having been born 7.9.1827
Their parents were John (a sailor) and Elizabeth (nee SATCHWILL) of Torquay.
This couple were married 1.1.1823 in Tormoham.
It looks like Thomas may have died early as a Thomas STEER was buried
13.5.1828 aged 8 Months at St Saviours.
