Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Hello Everyone, can I make a request to those who post to prune replies so
only the relevant bits of the original message are re-posted, otherwise we
get pages of repeated old messages and message header & footer info.
On the other hand it is good to see the list active again.
I have compiled a database of Steer(e)(s) baptisms, marriages & burials in Surrey, Kent, London & Middlesex.
Your George is the only likely candidate born Surrey to a George in 1826, the age of your George in the 1851 in Yorkshire fits plus his birthplace is Surrey N/K.
The other George sons of George are:
George born 1823 Lingfield and I have him in the workhouse in 1861. George 1827 close to the Surrey border in Edenbridge Kent born 1827 but he married and lived Chiddingstone.
George Weller STEER born 1828 Croydon and I've got him in Croydon until his death in 1898.
The only ones I cannot account for are non-conformists but near enough all Surrey records are either online or in indexes I've obtained. There are no burials that fit the age, so on the balance of probability I think you are right.
I suspect George's father was the son of George Steer c1757 Nutfield and Martha SARGENT, married 11 Oct 1781 Nutfield, but have decades of works still to do on the Steer's.
You say you have done a DNA test but assume only the family finder not the Y-DNA that would confirm a paternal line. If you do get a Y-DNA test to 67 or 111 markers if you can. Ancestry no longer support Y-DNA testing but FTDNA do and have regular sales. Also consider loading your current results onto the GedMatch website as well as FTDNA as that may bring up other matches.

Subject: [STEER] Re: Steer families, wherever you are
Thank you for keeping the interest in the Steer Rootsweb going!
I have been a member of the list for a while now.
Once again here is my interest:
I am researching my GGGrandfather George Steer born July 26,1826. His
Obituary and headstone list him as from Surrey county,England. I know
his father's name was George Steer also, as it was listed on his
marriage certificate. He married Hannah Arnett in Garton on the Wolds,
Yorkshire 12 December 1847. George and Hannah emigrated to Canada around
1852, farming in Tullamore, Peel county, Ontario. George and Hannah had 10 children, 2 of which I know did not survive childhood. George and
Hannah Steer retired to Markdale, Grey county Ontario around 1885.
George passed away April 15, 1899.
There is a George Steer christened 1 October 1826 in Horne, Surrey. He
was the son of George and Milly (Amelia Killick) Steer of Burstow, Surrey.
I believe strongly that this is my GG grandfather.
George and Amelia or Milly Steer had four other children:
Thomas Steer christened 28 June 1818 in Burstow, Surrey
Mary Steer christened 27 May 1821 in Burstow, Surrey
Elizabeth Steer christened 9 May 1824 in Burstow,Surrey
James Steer christened 21 February 1830 in Horne, Surrey
Listed in the burials for Burstow were:
Thomas Steer age 13 years, buried 10 July 1831
James Steer age 2 years, buried 19 November 1831
Amelia Steer age 34 years, buried 2 February 1832
Elizabeth Steer age 8 years , buried 17 February 1832
It seems the family did not fare well over that time. Outbreak of Illness?
Possibility that the remainder of the family would leave the area at that
I did have a DNA test done through Ancestry.
I have established a DNA connection through Amelia Killick to Richard
Killick ( Born 13 AUG 1721 • Limpsfield, Surrey. Death 9 DECEMBER 1791 •
So, I think I am looking in the right area.
So far, I have not found a DNA link to Steer's in Surrey.
