I have just added nearly 2000 individuals to the Steer Family site,
thanks to Steve Steere who sent me a gedcom. There will be some overlap
with the existing data and I will use the program to merge any records
where I can find duplicates.
If anyone can find examples, please let me know, either here, or from
the site or directly.
Now I have past the 80 year old stage I have slowed right down on
researching my Steer family, but seeing your list of Steers in the
different Counties , thought I would mention how well the Steers breed.
My g/g/grandfather James Steer migrated to Australia with his wife
and children in 1843 . One son Jesse married Mary Goode and had fifteen
children. Another son William married Elizabeth Dunkley , migrated to
New Zealand and had fourteen children. Most of both Jesse and Williams
children had large families also.
Just thought I would pass it on showing what good breeders the
Steer clan is and my lot came from Wisborough Green
Looking at the original data from the 1911 census, used to extend the
site at http://steerfamily.eu5.org/, I have been able to estimate which
counties had the largest numbers. Names looked at include Steer, Stear,
Steere and Sture (with plural versions)
Devon is the largest count with 943; London is second with 894. As these
figures are based on the family groupings, identified by a 'Head' in the
record, the total number of individuals is approximately 20% higher.
This is based on checking all names in these two counties.
The London area is the main focus, with Surrey, Sussex, Kent & Middlesex
being in the top 10, in that order out of 46 counties. York (all
Ridings) comes in at 4, after Surrey, with 434 individuals. Glamorgan is
the main Welsh county at #12 with 135
The search of families records 5010 names with 3866 being Steer. The
other names in rank are Steers(554), Stear(222, Stears(171),
Steere(168), Sture(25), Steeres(3). A few other others, such as Steeear,
McSteer, Stier are not in this list. As mentioned above the total of
individuals is probably 20% higher as lodgers or visitors are not
If any one is interested in the complete set I could provide a .csv file
Very interested in your dteailed list of Steer's in various
counties.Whilst I Ilve in Devon I have no direct relations that I can
trace in Devon yet the South Hams in Devon is full of them.My ancestors
are based in Surrey back to 1668 and from there they migrated to
London and from there to Glamorgan area in Wales and then to Devon in
the 1915 year
A distant cousin who has since died told me that my family originated
in the South Huish district of Devon but he never passed on the
details.Any details you may have of links between Surrey and Devon for
the Steer Family would be greatly appreciated. From Dave Steer Plymouh
