Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I have received two attachments to messages associated, I think, with this
list, but sent to me off-list. My iMac using Applemac OS 8.1 cannot open
them or read them. In any case I tend to delete attachments, unless I
know exactly who they are from and what they contain, because that route lie
viruses. One document was entitled "HAMSTER.DOC.pif" and the other
"ME_NUDE.MP3.scr" and both were without any form of accompanying message.
By all means send them to me again, but either in a form readable by Acrobat
Reader or within the text of a message. I.E if you have had no reply from
me, this is the cause !!

I came across the folowing IGI entry :-
> Orrings BROOKING
> Christening: 28 May 1769 Rattery, Devon
> Father: Edward BROOKING
Is this the Orange Brooking who married William Steer at Aveton Gifford and
was buried in South Milton ? I notice that Rattery is spelled "Rattre" in
older maps. As it is a village not far from Diptford and North Huish, and
there were two baptisms, Philip and Edmund, sons of Edmund Sture in the mid
to late 17th century, perhaps Rattery might be worth investigating : perhaps
too for the descendants of Edmund Sture, who sold Marridge House in 1699.
Hi Rob, thanks very much for your message.
Have you plans to obtain John's birth certificate? It would be
invaluable in identifying his parents and his place of birth.
Looking at the 1881 Census on my CD's, I have some difficulty with the
spelling of "Coal Brook, Devon". (In case the LDS people transcribed
the name incorrectly, have you a copy of the original transcript?)
I suppose this could mean Colebrooke, near Crediton or Colebrook, near
Cullompton. I'm afraid the different spellings of these two places may
not be too helpful either, as looking in detail through the STEER's born
at Colebrook(e), I suspect the spellings may be interchangeable anyway!
According to the census, the Robert STEER (Licensed Victualler) at
Bedwellty in 1881 was born at Colebrook (without the "e"). My wife
Sue's STEER ancestors definitely hailed from the Colebrooke district
(with an "e").
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get to Exeter yet to look through
the various parish registers, which could be quite a long and difficult
task, I suspect. The IGI isn't very helpful to our line either, I'm
afraid. Though you may have more success.
A majority of the many S Wales STEER's migrated from Devon (I've been
looking through the Wales 1881 Census CD). I have no information about
the relationships between them, though I have found 3 more families with
family members born at Colebrooke - quite a STEER migration from one
small area! We will have to get hold of those Colebrook(e) parish
But so far, no John STEER in Sue's family tree, I'm afraid. Sue's Mary
Ann married her first William Henry Wright at Colebrooke in October 1871
and I suspect they travelled immediately to Newport (she married the
second William Henry Wright at Newport; he was also born at Colebrooke,
in 1880). I see that John STEER's eldest son was born at Newport around
1872 and would have been exactly the same age as Mary Ann's eldest
child. The only address I have is the one quoted on the marriage
certificate in October 1871 - Holy Trinity, Pillgwenlly (Newport) - I
suspect they hadn't found a place to live yet. Do you have an address
for John STEER at around that time? If so, I will look it up in my map
of Newport! We have a prayer book inscribed by Mary Ann's pastor on the
occasion of her first marriage, "the Revd. Thomas Crozier, Colebrooke,
Devon". As to the Caerleon link (the place where Sue and I were
married, incidentally), no family links there, either, though I have to
confess that one of Sue's ancestors did marry someone called Davies (but
with an "e", I'm afraid - oh dear, here we go again).
Please let me know if you have any more information. Like you, I would
enjoy putting some of this STEER jigsaw together. Perhaps your STEER
line will prove easier to find - I have certainly enjoyed geater success
elsewhere in our family tree....
Best wishes for now,

1901 online service
Testing of the functionality of the final website has commenced. The loading of the free index, transcriptions and images into the final database has also started. Everything is on target for the launch of the online service on 2 January 2002.
PRO is in the final stages of designing a booklet to help first time users of the online service. The booklet will take the user through the basic searches and give useful tips on how to get the best out of the online service. The booklet will be freely available at record offices, libraries and at the Public Record Office, Kew and the Family Records Centre
1891 Census started already
PRO intends to digitise the 1891 returns and make them available on a county by county basis starting with London. They hope to have 1891 completed by Spring of 2003. Making the other censuses available online is a very high priority for the Public Record Office.
1881 feasibility study
PRO has employed a systems analysis team to advise on the linking of the GSU (Genealogical Society of Utah) 1881 database to the original images of the 1881 census returns. The images of the returns are already being scanned. They hope to have the linked service available by the end of 2002 with an amended charging mechanism to reflect the availablility of an existing database.
The Public Record Office on line catalogue - http://www.pro.gov.uk - has a
fair few references to STEER/STURE documents. Well worth a visit. There is
evidence of some of them being pretty litigious.
I think I have most of them on another one of my files.
I thought it about time to again detail my STEER family connections in the event there may be now I will learn a little more from someone with a common interest

could they contact me please? Could have a connection for you,
I read your STEER at AVETON GIFFORD - and, taking along shot, but then
got to try every avenue - can you elaborate on the Elizabeth STURE's - to
either make them "possibles" or eliminate them (other marriage, death) in
my search for my 6 x great grandmother - Elizabeth STURE, who married
William KENNAR, 18 November 1746, St. Michael and All Angels Church,
Other family members (such as Francis CODD - who married Susanna KENNARD
- Elizabeth's granddaughter) moved between AVETON GIFFORD and LODDISWELL.
Hoping you can help me here.

My research interests start with three STEERs.
The first, Robert Grills STEER (no other info).
His son, Robert STEER. Born in 1801 in Bishop Steignton, Devon, England. He
died in Tooradin Bridge, Vic, Australia on 22/6/1870.
And his son, Henry STEER, born in 1833, also in Bishop Steignton. he died
9/9/1909 at Showground Hill, Corowa, NSW, Australia. Henry is my
Can replies be copied to the list please as I suspect that this may well tie
in with the Francis Grills STEER family who is so popular.
<I notice that William STEER married Orange BROOKING at Aveton Gifford on
11th March 1800. William STEER senior was a witness.>
My STEER gang, or at least the direct line, rarely troubled the Aveton
Gifford PR. The only time was the baptism of my grandfather Alfred Samuel
Luscombe STEER in 1878, although the Luscombe bit was added later. The time
before was the marriage of William to my 4x great aunt Orange BROOKING. I
have at least three spelling of Orange including Oringe and Oeringe, but no
<In the census of 1851 for South Milton there is an Orange Steer, born 1779,
who is presumably the same one.>
Yes and there were granddaughters Orange, who married a LAMZED from
Dartmouth, and Alice Orange STEER, who finished up in the 1881 census
running a boarding house in a fairly post part of Westminster. Have often
wondered where she got the money from.
<Were their children born in South Milton.>
As far as I am aware they only had four children who were baptised. All in
Milton. They were
Mary STARE/STEER - 14.9.1800 baptised South Milton. Married 10.3.1824 South
Milton to Samuel GUNN
Walter STEAR/STEER - 4.4.1802 baptised South Milton - 21.4.1881 buried South
Milton. Married 18.3.1823 South Milton to Elizabeth WHIDDEN/WHIDDON
21.5.1798 baptised Thurlestone
William STEAR/STEER - 27.5.1803 baptised South Milton - 7.10.1810 buried
John STEAR/STEER - ?.4.1804 baptised South Milton - 26.9.1868 buried South
Milton. Married 15.11.1824 South Milton to Elizabeth MUMFORD
Father William was baptised South Milton 6.1.1779 and buried there
15.7.1866. Orange was buried there on Christmas eve 1853.
But grandfather William is my problem. This William STEEAR or STEER or STEAR
was married 2.3.1778 in South Milton to Hannah SMITH. He was buried
31.7.1831 in South Milton and Hannah 22.6.1832.
I believe the gravestones are all still standing.
But where did they spring from? According to their ages given on the
gravestone William was born 1753/4 and Hannah 1755/6.
I notice that William Steer married Orange Brooking at Aveton Gifford on
11th March 1800. William Steer senior was a witness. In the census of
1851 for South Milton there is an Orange Steer, born 1779, who is presumably
the same one. Somewhere I have seen "Orrings" instead of "Orange" but
can't recall where. Does anyone have information about this couple ?
Were there children born in South Milton.
I have a few more oddments of marriages at Aveton Gifford, if anyone is
