Name: Edward Charles (Ted) Pearce
Location: Queensland, Australia
My interest in Ceylon is due to the fact that I am a descendant of James Caulfeild
Treasurer of Ceylon. He is great great grandfather. I have had passed down to me a 3
piece silver tea set presented to him by the Ceylon Civil Service in 1843 and engraved as
such including the Caulfeild family crest. His son Henry St George Caulfeild had a
manuscript published here in Australia in instalments in the "The Steering Wheel and
Society Home Journal" from Jan 1937 concluding September the same year. He came to
Australia in 1883.
The Caulfeild family is recorded in Debrett's Peerage and Baronage (also Burke's).
In Debrett's the line is trace from Lord Toby Caulfeild peer of Ireland created a
baron in 1620. William the 5th baron was created the 1st Viscount in 1665. My
Grandfather Charles St George Caulfeild was the 11th Viscount Charlemont from 1967 to his
death in 1971. His brother Toby was the 10th Viscount from January 1964 to his death 1967.
I have a very old photograph in very poor condition of the memorial tablet that is hung in
the St Peters church at Colombo in memory of James Caulfeild. He died in Kandy in 1861
There were other members of the family in Ceylon also.
Burkett, Gray, Rehe and Russell are other names that I have an interest in too as they
