Hi,
I am researching DAVIDSON, SOMERVILLE, McENERY & YOUNG.
I noticed that you are researching Atwell, I have an original letter from a
Mr Jno Atwell to my grt grandmother Jane Nuttall (formerly Davidson) written
24/6/1876 from Badulla in reply to a letter from Jane regarding the winding
up of her brothers estate.
I have included my file summary of the letter below, for
your perusal.
ITEM I
LETTER DATED 24/6/1876 FROM BADULLA JNO ATWELL TO JANE (DAVIDSON) NUTGALL
This letter refers to property in Ceylon relating to her brother
Martins'estate.
Mr Atwell asks Jane to provide him with a Power of Attorney and advised that
Mr I Home's to whom she had previously given a Power of Attorney has done
nothing to protect the property or cause the executors to close the estate.
One of the executors was "one Mr H.T. Solomons who is a very old pensioner".
Mr Atwell speaks of "an old Kandian woman named Kiri mauica(unsure of
spelling), the mother of Mr Davidsons' child that died in Kandy about twelve
years ago" (the Mr Davidson being Martin Lindsay Davidson).
He also mentions the following relations:
Cousin James Davidson who came over to Ceylon from India-. "his cause of
death was a cold which settled on his lungs"- "buried in St Marks Church
Yard in this town.
"your cousin Johns' wife is now living on an Estate in this District with
her sister & brother in law Mr ?R.E Crofton ( unsure of 1st initial) who is
a coffee planter up here and in charge of a large estate".
Martins' land was about half an acre situated in a very secluded part of
town behind a large Buddhist Temple-half was a paddy field under paddy
cultivation at present, the remaining half was a garden planted with a few
coffee, coconut, Jack and Mango trees.
The land at that time was in the charge of the Kandian woman Kiri who had
been paying the land taxes. The land had originally had a house on it but
it was much neglected and the house tumbled down and the materials were all
stolen or lost.
He goes on to mention a parcel or box of jewelry in the District Court for
a long time, belonging to her parents which left in his will and was
supposed to have been forwarded to her when she came to Colombo some years
ago.
If you think this is one of your relations and would like a full transcript
and photocopy of the letter, I will forward a copy to you upon request.
I'm interested to know whether he is one of yours. i have already forwarded
this information to another Notice Board reader whois researching SOLOMONS.
Regards
