Hi to all from a new lister,
Would welcome help/advice on how to proceed please.
My searches into the history of Henry Folliott POWELL (b.c.1802 Staffs. Eng. - d.1869
Kent, Eng.), a Captain
in the Ceylon Regiment, have shown a marriage to Catherine Vassall BURLEIGH (b.c.1809 -
d.1881 Somerset, Eng.)
in Ceylon in 1830 with the births of several children in Ceylon prior to his retirement
and return to England c.1835.
Catherine's father, George BURLEIGH, a surgeon, was I believe attached to the Ceylon
Google has produced a couple of references for a George BURLEIGH - a Memorial in the Dutch
Cemetery at Galle
shows "died 8 April, 1826 aged 55 years" of unknown cause.
with additional information:
Vessel: HMS Brunswick, Event: Battle of the Glorious First of June 1794.
1793 - 1802 French Revolutionary War.
another gives him of 2nd Regiment during 1817/18 Kandyan Insurrection.
There was another reference to a George BURLEIGH of Burleigh Hill.
The London Times has an obit. for Rebecca BURLEIGH relict of the late George BURLEIGH
Esq., formerly on the
Medical Staff in the Island of Ceylon. She died at Jaffna, aged 78 on 23 Nov. 1855.
Are there records surviving that could be searched for information on George BURLEIGH and
BMD Registers for Ceylon c.1800's?
Could someone recommend book/s which might tell me about the British and army life in
Any advice on where to go next most gratefully received.
Regards, Madalyn (UK)
