Your research has proved very interesting. The ML Davidson is our Martin
Lindsay Davidson, son of James and brother of my grt grandmother. We have
old letters written by James at Kandy & Martin at Badulla in 1844 whereby
Martin gives his father advise about court matters & speaks a lot about
court action & people involved in the district court therefore I had
wondered if his occupation was in this field. To have his occupation
confirmed is quite a breakthrough.
Whilst I don't know of a D Davidson, the mention of Davidson in relation to
the Royal Mail Coach also adds some confirmation to a family story that
James delivered the first mail in Ceylon and was given a Government land
grant. James occupation in 1831 was recorded as Government Contractor on
Jane's birth certificate maybe the D Davidson has some family connection, he
appears to have come from Bombay or has some connection to Bombay which is
interesting because Martin speaks of the sorting out of some sort of legal
matters in Bombay in 1844.
The J Davidson at Kandy would be our James. The surveying assistant surgeon
John Davidson could be the brother or the nephew of James born 1827. I
don't think it would be brother John, he went to Ceylon in 1826 with the
78th Regiment (I think he may have been a Mess Sergeant. John had sons
John, born 1827 and James, born 1829. John junior would be 17 and, as
assistant, could have been in training they started young in those days.
In 1876; John's wife (I think she was Kez Fernando) was living on an Estate
at Badulla with her sister & brother in law (the Croftons), his brother
James had recently returned from Bombay and died that year in Badulla.
There definitely seems to be some connections with Bombay & Badulla
Davidsons which may link the D Davidson and A Davidson at Badulla.
Looking forward to meeting up in May.

I think these were probably Land auctioneers so they may have purchased the
