I have recently subscribed to this list as I have ancestors who settled
in Ceylon in the early 19th century. My interests lie in the families
and associates of John Armitage born England who settled in Colombo,
Ceylon after a period in Brazil, in the 1830's. There he married Fanny
Henriette Jumeaux and formed the family company, Armitage Bros.
merchants and traders. He built a large home in Colombo called Moderah
House for his family, but due to illness had to retire back to England
in 1855 where he died shortly afterwards aged 48 years. His sons
continued in business in Ceylon for some time - namely:- John Scott
Armitage, Henry Turnour Armitage, Benjamin Louis Armitage, George
Armitage, James Armitage and Charles Cyrus Armitage.
Would like to hear from anyone willing to share information or history
of our family and their lives in Ceylon. The favour will certainly be
returned where possible.
Robyn Clarke (nee Armitage)
