I am looking for information about my grandfather, Stuart William
HOWARD, last heard of in Ceylon in 1934.
He was born October 4, 1873 (baptised in Agra), the son of
William and Margaret HOWARD. His father, William, was Head Clerk
to the Political Agent in Jeypore.
He served in the army as an engineer - not much detail available
except he was in railway construction, with evidence of his being
involved in the building of the Wainganga Bridge in 1906 (the
same year he married my grandmother Mabel Violet RIX) and of his
being in the North West Frontier Field Force (Landi Kotal) in
January 1920. His son, my father, was born in 1913.
He was in Kenya in 1924 (possibly earlier), but separated from my
grandmother when she returned with my father to England in 1926.
He returned possibly to India, possibly direct to Ceylon.
In 1934 (he would then have been aged 61) he wrote from Colombo
(c/o Thomas Cook) to my father on his 21st birthday, and to my
grandmother on their wedding anniversary. I have nothing further.
From my father (now deceased) I gather he died in Ceylon. I would
like to find out what he was doing in Ceylon, when he died, and
where he was buried.
If anyone can provide information, or suggest further avenues of
enquiry, I would be most grateful.
