Nick, there is a self written precis of the career of G H M Hyde, in
England and Ceylon, with portrait, in "Twentieth Century Impressions of
Ceylon" page 123. The Gilliat name has been associated with Ceylon since
the 1860s at least. Hydes appear in Commerce and Planters lists, as does
Gilliat, up to at least 1926. The Mackwood name is found in Ceylon from the
1860s too. The family business had large interests in commerce and planting.
If you know what religion the family was it would help with searching
Colombo church records. cheers, Larry&Coreen Andresen
This is my first posting to this group, so a little introduction.
I have been researching various families in time associated with the name HYDE, it has now brought my researches to Ceylon.
I am looking for information on George Herbert MacCarthy HYDE and his wife Evelyn (nee'Gilliat), from research carried out by my late Grandfather
we have Emelyn Gilliat of Hanwell as his spouse, but no records show a marriage for this couple in the UK, so I wonder if the marriage was in Ceylon?
I have the dates and places for his birth and his death, but nothing of his marriage.
The connection we have for the HYDE and GILLIAT family is G.H.M. Hyde last will, where it mentions "Crested" ( I assume GILLIAT Crest) silverware to be given to Peter Gilliat, son of Lionel Oswald GILLIAT, Tea Merchant/Producer. Nothing is mentioned of Evelyn HYDE (nee' Gilliat), following on from this there is a marriage for a Evelyn Grace GILLIAT to a De Seigneux in 1921, Kensington, London and other information which connects Evelyn and Lionel Oswald GILLIAT as Brother and Sister, children of Hubert(Herbert) Adkin GILLIAT and Fanny MACKWOOD.
So if anyone can advise me where to look for more information about the above, as mentioned I have various items of information on G.H.M. HYDE, but would like to find out more about his life and if George and Evelyn had a family.
There is on youtube an item about GHM Hyde and his work on Ceylon, makes interesting reading
